Position Summary: JMT's Richmond, VA Office is growing and seeks a motivated individual who desires increasing responsibilities across a variety of bridge and transportation structure projects at the local, state, and federal level. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing bridge and transportation structure projects of varying complexity in accordance with AASHTO, VDOT, and client specifications; preparing and checking plans prepared by others for conformance with specifications and standards; designing and detailing structural components; preparing construction cost estimates and specifications; and reviewing shop drawings. In addition, the successful candidate will perform existing condition assessments and inspections of bridge and transportation structures in support of developing reports and repair and rehabilitation recommendations.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities



  • Plan, schedule, conduct or coordinate detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope
  • Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography and other topographical or geologic data to plan projects
  • Perform design computations
  • Design projects in accordance with client specifications and guidelines, using design software and drawing tools
  • Develop construction cost estimates
  • Assist in the preparation of engineering documents for advertisement and construction
  • Prepare and compile contract plans, specifications and estimates
  • Manage project sub-consultants and in-house support disciplines
  • Develop extra work order requests and open-end contract task proposals
  • Prepare proposals as required
  • Attend meetings with clients
  • Coordinate with internal team members to ensure project completion by the defined deadline and established quality

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • Ability to analyze statically determinate and indeterminate structures and bridges.
  • Knowledge of structural design principles for steel, reinforced concrete, and prestressed concrete for both superstructure and substructure components.
  • Familiarity with practices and procedures for structural detailing.
  • Experience with construction cost estimating.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a dynamic, fast-paced team oriented environment.
  • Assist in the preparation of plan and specification documents for advertisement and construction.
  • Coordinate with design team to ensure project completion within defined schedule, budget, and quality.
  • Experience in using structural analysis and design software, MicroStation drafting software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including WORD and EXCEL.
  • Ability to write, speak, and communicate clearly.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from ABET accredited engineering program.
  • Virginia PE license.
  • 10+ years of experience in the design of highway bridges and structures



Preferred Experience



  • Experience in performing in-service bridge safety inspections preferred.
  • Master's Degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structures preferred.



Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment 75% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment. Approval of remote work is at the supervisor's discretion after successful completion of a probationary period.

Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
