PURPOSE

Supervises and coordinates all activities of workers engaged in the distribution of products. Organizes and oversees the gathering of products, checking of products, quality assurance and commitment to deadlines. Assigns motor vehicles and drivers for conveyance of customer orders.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES




  • Prepares work schedules to ensure that sufficient shift personnel are available for workload demands. Assigns duties and examines work for conformance to policies and procedures.
  • Reviews dispatch operations to identify technical and operational training needs and recommend operational improvements. Reviews and recommends modifications to computer-aided dispatch systems.
  • Tests, inspects, and operates radio, telephone, computer, and other equipment as needed.
  • Prepares, reviews, and maintains reports, statistics, and records.
  • Performs the work of subordinate dispatch personnel as needed.
  • Meets with committees and other interested groups to develop, review, and update policies and procedures for dispatch operations.
  • Maintains list of available vehicles. Assigns vehicles according to factors such as length and purpose of trip, freight requirements, and preference of user. Issues keys, record sheets, and credentials to drivers.
  • Records time of departure, destination, cargo, and expected time of return for all deliveries.
  • Investigates overdue vehicles.
  • Directs activities of drivers by two-way radio.
  • Confers with customers to expedite or locate missing, misrouted, delayed, or damaged merchandise.
  • Maintains record of mileage, fuel used, repairs made, and other expenses.
  • Establishes service or delivery routes.
  • Assigns helpers to drivers.
  • Reviews work orders from departments or complaints from customers, and records type and scope of service to be performed.
  • Determines and schedules orders according to urgency.
  • Contacts supply storekeeper to verify availability of parts and equipment to ensure scheduled work performance.
  • Receives check in calls from delivery workers by radio, telephone, or in person.
  • Informs workers of type and location of work to be performed and dispatches workers to job.
  • Keeps records of repairs, installation and hours required on each job.
  • Assigns orders to lift operators to be pulled from inventory.
  • Other duties as assigned.



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

COMPETENCIES




  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
