About Disability and Access and Disability Cultural Center

Based in the philosophy that all students should be assured equal access and opportunity, Disability and Access (D&A) works to eliminate physical, instructional and attitudinal barriers by providing reasonable accommodations and fostering awareness within the University community.

The Disability Cultural Center (DCC) supports disability community and education for disabled students, faculty, staff and alumni and all members of the University community. The first of its kind in Texas, the DCC works to create and sustain a sense of belonging for disabled people who study, teach and work at UT. In collaboration with campus partners, the DCC strives to create a community where disability is respected and valued as an important part of our campus community, and accessibility is built into the structure and design of all aspects of campus life.

Purpose

Develop, implement and evaluate Disability and Access (D&A) education, communication and outreach programs in collaboration with UT's Disability Cultural Center (DCC), D&A staff, student groups, and campus and community partners. Oversee D&A communications, including newsletters, website updates, emails, and social media. Support D&A staff with administrative tasks and special projects as needed. Work closely with the DCC to establish and maintain relationships with campus and community groups and serve as a point of contact for campus and community inquiries.

Responsibilities

Outreach and Education

  • Oversee all daily logistical operations of education and outreach programs, including but not limited to: scheduling trainings, securing supplies for trainings, tabling, developing and implementing educational programs and staff development opportunities, and coordinating and marketing events and opportunities
  • Oversee and implement event set up, including space management and coordination of relevant supplies and materials
  • Develop and conduct trainings for university community (including students, faculty and staff) on disability and accessibility. Oversee program updates, evaluation and training of facilitators
  • Assesses outreach and education program effectiveness and recommend changes in programming, procedures, and policies, as appropriate. Develop and implement new activities and programming
  • Establish and develop successful partnerships on campus that are mutually beneficial and support increased accessibility on campus
  • Collaborate with UT's Disability Cultural Center and other campus partners to plan and execute campus wide events and programming, including Disability Access and Belonging Month, orientation events, and Disability Graduation
  • Facilitate relationships and coordinate events with career services offices, development and other campus and community partners related to employment, internships and career development
  • Organize and facilitate joint Disability and Access/Disability Cultural Center Student Advisory Committee and Faculty Advisory Committee

Communication

  • Manage D&A communications (monthly newsletter, social media, emails and website) and collaborate with Communications team on marketing campaigns and assets. Create and update educational materials and reports, including but not limited to: handouts, videos, online modules, annual reports, etc.
  • Screen, schedule, and complete interview requests for student assignments and published media
  • Serve as point of contact for general inquiries to D&A. Provide referrals and resources where appropriate. May assist with Drop In and/or intake appointments with current or prospective students and families

Administrative

  • Prepare program budget and control expenditures in accordance with budget allocations
    Function as a member of D&A, assist with general functions of the office and special projects as assigned
  • Oversee disability-related scholarships and awards
  • Support operations of the physical Disability Cultural Center space
  • May co-supervise student staff, interns and/or graduate students

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to the work to be performed
  • Demonstrated successful experience in program design and implementation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the lived disability experience, disability culture, disability studies, and inclusive design
  • Experience working with student organizations, student development, student advising, and event planning
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with various students, faculty, staff and people from the surrounding communities from varying backgrounds
  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking and group facilitation
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and management skills
  • Excellent communication skills (ability to express ideas clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing) and ability to develop email, social media, and educational content
  • Ability to work effectively and pay close attention to detail in a high traffic area
  • Skills to prioritize workload, with frequent interruptions
  • Reasonable knowledge of policies and procedures of a large university is desirable

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Disability Studies, Social Work, Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education, or related field or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in student services delivery and student group advising in an educational setting
  • Experience working in higher education setting
  • General knowledge of reasonable accommodations in an academic setting
  • Familiarity with Universal Design for Learning and/or assistive technology
  • Experience as an administrator of communication platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Wordpress, MailChimp, etc.)
  • Individual or group clinical or counseling experience

Salary Range

$61,000 + depending on qualifications

Work Shift

  • Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm
  • Occasional after-hours events (approximately 5-10 times per month)
  • Occasional weekend events (approximately 2-3 times per year)

Working Conditions

  • Frequent travel across UT Austin campus to conduct outreach and attend meetings.
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
