Job Summary

We are seeking an Staff Research Associate to work in the Zaro laboratory. This is a laboratory-based research position focusing on mechanisms by which cancer and pathogens evade our immune system. The lab utilizes chemical and biological tools and mass spectrometry techniques to answer these questions. Under supervision, responsibilities will include performing cell culture, mass spectrometry sample prep, data acquisition and analysis and administrative duties such as managing safety protocols and inventory. Additional responsibilities include assisting in maintaining basic laboratory operations. The successful applicant will be trained by and work directly with several graduate students in the laboratory.


The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $31.04 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry is one of three departments in the UCSF School of Pharmacy and is under the administrative oversight of the Department Chair, Michelle Arkin. Through research and teaching, the Department seeks to understand the biological principles of small molecules, proteins, and cellular design, and to apply these principles for the therapeutic benefit of patients.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in chemistry, biochemistry or a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience with mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)
  • Experience with cell culture
  • Undergraduate research experience outside of the classroom

Preferred Qualifications


  • Microsoft Excel proficiency
  • R proficiency
  • Experience with technical writing
  • Experience with UV-Vis Spectroscopy
