JOB SUMMARY

The Attending Physician IX Nephrology physicians provide subspecialty-level consultative and direct care to a wide array of adult patients with complex medical problems confirmed or suspected to be caused or complicated by renal diseases. Nephrology physicians also further the educational mission of the Cook County Health (CCH) through training activities and regular participation in hospital-based, regional, and national conferences. They also participate in systematic efforts to improve patient care and medical training through administrative leadership and active participation in multidisciplinary quality improvement activities.

Typical Duties



  • * Provides renal consultative care to adult inpatients with complex surgical, obstetric, medical and/or critical care illnesses caused or complicated by confirmed or suspected renal diseases by regularly staffing hospital-based renal consult services according to the service schedule established by the nephrology division chair.
  • * Provides direct primary care to adult patients requiring hospitalization to the Stroger Hospital inpatient medicine services for general medical problems- according to the service schedule established by the nephrology division chair.
  • * Provides direct supervision and adhere to internal and external regulatory requirements related to the performance and evaluation of assigned advanced nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants working in the ambulatory and inpatient settings.
  • * When attending on each of the in and outpatient care activities described above, to provide direct supervision of medical students, residents and renal fellows assigned to these services, including: leading daily bedside rounds; conducting didactic teaching sessions; observing and providing informal and formal structured evaluations of trainee performance; completing and discussing structured performance evaluations with trainees in a timely fashion; and case presentations and/or discussions during regularly scheduled case conferences.
  • * Conducts regular teaching conferences for medical students, medical residents and/or renal fellows on core renal topics as assigned by the renal division chair.
  • * Regularly attends and participates as a presenter or discussant in weekly case and didactic conferences, including weekly Grand Rounds conferences organized by the Department of Medicine.
  • * Serves as a role model in consistently providing effective and compassionate patient care; adhering to policies; and manifesting respectful and professional behavior, scholarly inquiry and commitment to self- and institutional improvement.
  • * Regularly attends and participates in divisional and departmental administrative meetings.
  • * Participates in or lead structured quality improvement activities related to the hospital function as assigned by the nephrology division chair.
  • * Contributes regularly to the design, performance, analysis, and presentation of nephrology related research, including applications for intra- and extramural grant funding and for approval by applicable institutional review boards.
  • * Maintains valid certification in the subspecialty of nephrology as administered by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
  • * Maintains valid physician's and controlled substance licenses in the State of Illinois, and a valid controlled substance registration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
  • * Maintains and document continued medical education as required by state regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



  • * Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited college or university
  • * Licensed as a Physician and Surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment
  • * Board Certified in Nephrology or Board Eligible in a pathway leading to certification in nephrology specialty board with two (2) years of starting employment
  • * Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by start of employment
  • * Experience and demonstrated aptitude in the performance of clinical research in all phases, from conception to presentation
  • * Experience and proficiency in using standard word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation and statistical software
  • * Demonstrated ability in providing effective and compassionate patient care; adhering to policies and precepts related to infection -control and antimicrobial stewardship; and manifesting respectful and professional behavior, scholarly inquiry and commitment to self- and institutional improvement
  • * Demonstrated ability in instructing colleagues and trainees in formal and informal settings
  • * Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a wide variety of ambulatory and inpatient clinical settings, and with patients, trainees, colleagues and other healthcare workers from a broad spectrum of socioeconomic, racial and ethnic backgrounds



Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics



  • * Demonstrated ability in providing effective and compassionate patient care; adhering to policies and precepts related to infection control and antimicrobial stewardship; and manifesting respectful and professional behavior, scholarly inquiry and commitment to self- and institutional improvement.
  • * Demonstrated competency in performing and having ongoing experience in native and transplant kidney biopsy.
  • * Must be willing and able to travel efficiently to all areas on the campus of Stroger Hospital and/or other assigned CCH facilities, and to travel efficiently between hospital and ambulatory sites as needed, with a valid driver's license and automobile appropriate for travel to CCH sites across Cook County when necessary.
  • * Must be available to work on those evenings, weekends and holidays necessary to staff inpatient services or ambulatory sites as outlined above.
  • * Must be willing to be available by pager or cell phone to assigned clinic patients, staff and colleagues at all times, and to obtain coverage from a colleague when unavailable due to illness or travel.
