Position Summary:

The Department of Animal Sciences and Agricultural Education in the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology at California State University, Fresno seeks applicants for a tenure-track, academic year position as an Assistant/Associate Professor in Agricultural Education. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, advise students and student organizations, conduct scholarly and applied research, and engage in service-related activities. Primary teaching responsibilities and research interests will be in the area of agriculture teacher preparation including supervision of student teachers. Teaching online, evening classes, and other alternative teaching times and methods is required. Additionally, assistance with annual FFA field day events and other department events and activities along with service on department, college, and university committees is expected.

The agricultural education and communication program consists of approximately 250 undergraduate majors pursuing degrees in agriculture teacher preparation or agricultural communications. Additionally, there are 35-40 post-baccalaureate students pursuing secondary agriculture teaching credentials as well as 8-10 students in the Agricultural Science Master's program. The undergraduate program is designed to prepare students for careers as secondary agriculture teachers, leaders in the agriculture industry, and agricultural communications specialists needed in agriculture and related industries. The academic program is enhanced through practical experience provided at the university's 1,000-acre agricultural laboratory consisting of crop and livestock production units, dairy and food processing facilities, meats laboratory, winery, and farm market

Qualifications:

Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.):
  1. An earned doctorate Agricultural Education or other closely-related discipline from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required..
  2. Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered; however, for appointment, the doctorate must be completed by August 1, 2025.

Required Experience:
  1. Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds;
  2. Successful secondary agriculture teaching experience;
  3. Successful undergraduate and/or graduate teaching experience; and
  4. Ability to maintain an ongoing program of applied research, grant writing and scholarly activity.

For appointment to the rank of Associate Professor a candidate must have a strong record of excellence in teaching at the university level and a sustained record of scholarly research and publication

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Successful experience as a secondary agriculture department chair and/or FFA advisor
  2. Successful experience supervising agriculture student teachers;
  3. Experience advising undergraduate and/or graduate students;
  4. Involvement with agricultural student organizations and events;
  5. Knowledge of California secondary agricultural education and community college systems;
  6. An understanding of California's agricultural industry and production systems; and
  7. Positive interactions with students, colleagues, industry stakeholders, government agencies, media and the general public.

Overview:

The Department of Animal Sciences and Agricultural Education offers options in agricultural communications, teacher preparation, basic animal science (pre-professional), pre-veterinary medicine, livestock business management, dairy science, equine science, and meat technology. Courses integrate animal evaluation, behavior, disease, environment management, genetics, health, marketing, muscle biology, nutrition, physiology, production, and reproduction. Instruction in the animal science disciplines is enhanced through practical application at the various farm laboratory units. The facilities include the Beef, Dairy, Poultry, Meat Lab, Quarter Horse, Sheep, and Swine units which are maintained to support this educational endeavor. The department is extremely proud of its outstanding faculty and the level and quality of student activities in which they participate.

The San Joaquin Valley has been the world's top agricultural producer since the 1940s, with over 220 commercial crops grown throughout the six counties. California is the nation's leading dairy state, producing 20% of all the milk consumed in the nation. Fresno and neighboring Tulare counties are the nation's top producing dairy counties, with milk value in excess of 2 billion dollars annually. California has about 1 million beef cows and ranks in the top 10 states in the U.S. for cattle in feedlots.
