About the College/Unit/Department
The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1946, is dedicated to training future veterinarians, providing services to animal owners and veterinarians, and conducting investigations to improve the health of animals as well as people. The college benefits pets and their owners, food-producing animals, and wildlife by offering the highest quality hospital and diagnostic laboratory services. Equipped with the most technologically advanced facilities located on a university campus, the college is dedicated to safeguarding public health by studying emerging infectious diseases that affect both animal and human health.

Large Animal Emergency and Critical Care is one of three inpatient services within the In-House Section of University of Georgia's Veterinary Medical Center's Large Animal Hospital. The other two inpatient services are Large Animal Surgery and Large Animal Internal Medicine. Together, these services have 13 faculty (4 surgery, 6 internal medicine, and 3 ECC) and 15 house officers (2 ECC Fellows, 1 ECC Resident, 4 Internal Medicine Residents, 3 Surgery Residents, and 5 Rotating Interns). The Large Animal Anesthesia service is also part of the section with 2 (of 5 total) anesthesia faculty and 1 (of 4 total) anesthesia residents within the Department of Large Animal Medicine.
The Large Animal In-House Section shares a mission to advance animal health and well-being through high quality large animal veterinary practice in the hospital, providing primary care and specialty services, clinical education for veterinary students, interns, and residents, and clinically applicable scientific study. The large animal hospital, including the ECC service, serves a diverse large animal caseload (majority equine) in the Southeast, predominantly Georgia and South Carolina, meeting the needs of large animals and their owners while delivering high-quality clinical education. The ECC clinical rotation for fourth year students is a cornerstone opportunity for gaining experience and knowledge in large animal emergency medicine and surgery. Thanks to the diverse qualifications of the faculty and collaborative efforts of the services within the section, patients, clients, and students benefit from the wide spectrum of veterinary services that are available within the Large Animal Hospital.
