Overview

The Chaplain will provide spiritual care and counseling, sacramental functions, and resources to meet the spiritual, religious, emotional, and psychological needs of patients, families, and hospital employees. The Chaplain functions as an integral part of the interdisciplinary team in a patient-centered culture committed to providing "...exceptional health care services, resulting in healing in the broadest sense." The Chaplain will engage others in their experience of the Sacred, being sensitive to a wide range of cultures and faiths, being respectful of spiritual or religious preferences. In a professional, competent, and informed manner, the Chaplain will affirm the dignity of each person and explore sources of strength and hope. The Chaplain understands the impact of illness and injury on spiritual well-being and seeks to remind others that persons function optimally when there is integration of body, mind, and spirit. Perform other duties as assigned.

Part-Time position requiring 20 hours per week.


Responsibilities

  • Respond to pages or staff consults in a timely manner to triage situation
  • Respond to on-call demand by being on site within twenty minutes
  • Meet the needs of the injured, dying, and give support to visitors and staff
  • Record each visit and document initial assessment
  • Provide end of life support as requested
  • Provide sacramental ministry as requested for patients, families, and staff members
  • Utilize the resources of patient's local congregation/parish to assist in meeting the spiritual needs of the patient and their families, with the goal of enabling persons to utilize their own faith as a resource for health and healing.
  • Available to debrief staff after a traumatic event
  • To work as an effective member of the Mercyhealth Pastoral Care Team and multi-disciplinary teams in all matters

Education and Experience

Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree, its equivalent or higher, from an accredited school of theology is preffered. Two units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or an equivalent program are required. Board Certification or Board Certification eligible with a national certifying agency (e.g., Association of Professional Chaplains, National Association of Catholic Chaplains, or National Association of Jewish Chaplains) preferred.

Two units of CPE required. Board Certification or Board Certification eligible with a national certifying agency (e.g., Association of Professional Chaplains, National Association of Catholic Chaplains, or National Association of Jewish Chaplains) preferred.


Special Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, handle, finger, feel, reach, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, and kneel. This job requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
