Job Overview:

The RWJBH Facilities Management Planning, Design & Construction ( FMPDC ) team is committed to excellence in creating and maintaining facilities that support RWJBH's mission. To accomplish this, we are seeking an Architectural Designer ( AD ) who successfully support the development of Planning and Design solutions that meet specific Capital Project requirements in the breadth of our Healthcare Facility environments. The AD will secondarily support the FMPDC in implementing effective Building Information Modeling ( BIM ) and Planning & Design compliance standards.

The AD must have the ability to analyze and understand a myriad of operational workflows and end-user client ( customer ) needs for programmatically rich Healthcare projects in order to develop efficient and effective Architectural Planning and Design solutions against the backdrop of strict state and federal regulations. Collaboration with customers, facility owners and directors, contractors, design firms, State and Federal Regulators and other industry professionals will be required. The AD will assist in the assessment and creation of programmatic needs, both for space and functional operation, and develop Planning and Design solutions for projects in acute care, ambulatory, medical office and other types of Healthcare facilities. The AD will collaborate with the FMPDC Architectural Planning Manager, Architectural Technicians and Space Management Technicians regularly to execute Work.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor s degree in Architecture, Interior Design or equivalent area of study.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of working experience in an Architecture or Interior Design firm with demonstrated knowledge of the principles of Architectural practice such as building materials and products, engineering systems, Regulatory Approval processes, etc.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of demonstrated experience working on Healthcare Planning & Design projects, including knowledge of the principles of Healthcare-related building codes, Planning strategies and other regulations affecting Healthcare Design.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Autodesk applications including Revit, AutoCAD and Bluebeam Revu. Candidates should also be proficient in the suite of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Rendering skills and familiarity/experience with related software such as Adobe Photoshop, SketchUp and Autodesk Revit are beneficial.
  • Ability to prepare freehand sketches to demonstrate preliminary block planning and layout concepts.
  • An understanding and basic knowledge of the entire project development process and phases and adept at interpreting building codes to the fullest advantage of RWJBH FMPDC.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and skilled in written and verbal communications, time management, problem-solving and trouble-shooting to develop creative solutions.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, taking direction to perform specific tasks without direct supervision. Also, ability to work collaboratively with others of varying degrees of industry experience at multiple Facility locations.
  • Detail-oriented, methodical, meticulous and process-oriented and can effectively handle a heavy workload, managing multiple, simultaneous priorities with critical deadlines and accurate results.
  • Able to represent the organization and interact in a professional manner with internal and external work groups.

Essential Functions:

Successful candidates should be:

  • Experienced and knowledgeable in the use and function of Healthcare spaces among various platforms, including acute care / hospital / inpatient, outpatient / ambulatory, and physician practices / clinics.
  • Proficient in calculating square-foot size of spaces based on building and space code requirements.
  • Able to research, understand and apply building and space code requirements to Planning Concepts.
  • Proficient in understanding three-dimensional spaces and elements of the built environment and able to perform onsite surveys of current and prospective RWJBH Facility locations to:
  • Evaluate appropriateness of spaces for test-fitting and appropriateness of location for flow of Healthcare Operations.
  • Evaluate conditions of spaces, taking into account the functional use and workflow of personnel operating in spaces;
  • Take accounting of room data such as architectural and medical equipment, furnishings, and materials in use and their general condition.
  • Adept at building partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives and goals; also, adept at recognizing impasses and requesting assistance and advice with perseverance to consistently achieve results, even under tough circumstances.
  • Adept at learning quickly, applying insights from past efforts to new situations, and cross-checking for inconsistencies.
  • Able to solve problems involving several options in various situations utilizing pronounced analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Able to handle additional duties as may be assigned as needed depending on Corporation priorities, goals, and objectives.
