Subject Matter Expert (SME) - Computational Thinking and Problem Solving for Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (Online Course Development)

Position Type: Contract

Compensation: $3,000

Location: Remote

Position Overview: We are seeking an expert in Computational Thinking and Problem Solving to develop an essential course for our Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program. This online course will equip students with the skills to apply computational thinking and structured problem- solving approaches across technology fields, with an emphasis on logical reasoning, algorithmic thinking, and systematic problem decomposition.

The SME will collaborate with our instructional design team to craft an 8-week course that introduces key computational problem-solving techniques and tools, helping students learn to identify, analyze, and approach problems in a structured, algorithmic manner. The ideal candidate will create learning experiences that foster critical thinking, data analysis, and foundational algorithm design in preparation for advanced programming and software engineering coursework.
This role is ideal for a passionate professional who excels in translating computational thinking and problem-solving skills into a structured learning experience for the next generation of tech professionals. If you're excited about making a meaningful impact, we invite you to apply.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum Development: Design course modules covering core computational thinking skills, including problem abstraction, decomposition, pattern recognition, and algorithm design. Ensure concepts are presented in a practical, applied manner.
  • Content Creation: Develop interactive course materials, assignments, and assessments that engage students at varying skill levels. Include real-world problem-solving scenarios that reflect industry challenges and require algorithmic solutions.
  • Learning Outcomes Alignment: Ensure content aligns with the fundamentals of computational thinking, preparing students to apply these skills in computer science and technology contexts.
  • Collaboration with Instructional Designers: Partner with instructional designers to produce content that is engaging, effective in an online environment, and aligned with best practices in online learning.
  • Assessment Development: Create formative and summative assessments, including problem sets, case studies, and projects that reinforce computational problem-solving skills.
  • Content Review and Industry Alignment: Keep course materials updated with the latest computational thinking methodologies and problem-solving strategies, aligning with industry standards and emerging trends in technology problem-solving.

Required Qualifications:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Industry Experience: 3+ years of experience in computational problem solving, programming, or software engineering, with expertise in computational thinking methodologies and algorithm design.
  • Teaching/Training Experience: Prior experience as an SME, instructor, or curriculum developer in higher education or corporate training is preferred.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in algorithm design, computational problem-solving techniques, and foundational programming skills.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal skills, with the ability to convey complex problem-solving methods in accessible terms for a diverse student audience.
  • Collaboration Skills: Ability to work effectively with instructional designers to create iterative and refined course content.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree: Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in Online Course Development: Familiarity with asynchronous and hybrid learning models, especially in computational and technical subject areas.
  • Familiarity with LMS and Course Authoring Tools: Proficiency in LMS platforms and tools that support computational thinking and problem-solving exercises.
  • Certification: Relevant certifications in algorithm design or computational thinking practices are a plus.
