This position functions to assist the licensed pharmacist in providing pharmaceutical services to patients, as well as providing necessary services and information to nursing and medical staff. These services include preparation and packaging of medications, distribution of medications, supplies and equipment, maintaining proper inventory levels, ensuring medications are in date and secure, keeping appropriate records and documentation, submitting charges/credits. This position is also responsible for supporting initiatives of area supervisors and managers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. High school graduate, or equivalent required.

2. Must be registered through the State of Maryland as a certified pharmacy technician OR be registered as a pharmacy technician trainee and become certified within 15 months of hire.

3. If employed in Maryland, national certifications are waived.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Registered with the Maryland Board of Pharmacy as a certified pharmacy technician (CPhT.)

2. If employed in Maryland, national certifications are waived.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Previous hospital experience is desired.

2. Experience with aseptic technique is desired.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Prepares and packages medication dosage forms for oral, ophthalmic, topical, and rectal administration for patient use.

2. Maintains accurate dispensing records for controlled substances and other medications, supplies and equipment.

3. Maintains efficient area operations and resolves problems to ensure optimal customer service.

4. Works under the direction of a licensed pharmacist in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.

5. Maintains appropriate medication, equipment and supplies inventory levels to minimize delays in customer service.

6. Under the direction of a pharmacist, inspects medication areas and maintains storage standards set forth by the Joint Commission and other health regulatory agencies.

7. Maintains the cleanliness and neatness of the area and anywhere medications are stored.

8. Interacts with physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals.

9. Attends department-sponsored continuing education programs.

10. Satisfies training and education requirements.

11. Complies with all rules and regulation of the hospital and pharmacy department.

12. Demonstrates ability to work as a member of a team.

13. Demonstrates confidentiality.

14. Demonstrates professionalism in interpersonal verbal and written communication skills with colleagues, physicians and ancillary department personnel.
