Job Summary

The Research Assistant needed in laboratory working on the cellular mechanisms of neuromodulation using mouse models. The Research Assistant will perform multiple laboratory tasks such as mouse colony management, genotyping, lab supply ordering, histology, immunohistochemistry, stereotactic surgeries, and mouse behavioral assays. These tasks are to support the research of Dr. Bender and his trainees (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows).

Candidates should have strong communication skills, be able to work independently as well as enjoy working as part of a team. Job will entail independent work as well as teamwork and mentored training on new laboratory skills.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $31.04 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Bender Lab is interested in understanding how the brain encodes information at the synaptic, cellular, and network level. We employ a variety of electrophysiological, optical, and genetic techniques to probe information processing across neuronal compartments, from synaptic inputs onto dendritic spines, to the site of action potential initiation in the axon initial segment, to transmitter release in axonal boutons. This work is complemented by biophysical studies of single channels, compartmental modeling, and in vivo recordings and behavior.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience with rodent handling, behavior and animal colony management
  • Able to perform and troubleshoot PCR, including genotyping
  • Able to perform and troubleshoot routine histological techniques, including perfusion with fixative, immunohistochemistry, and imaging using fluorescent microscopy

Preferred Qualifications


  • At least 1 year of laboratory experience in a Neuroscience laboratory, part time during undergraduate education is acceptable
  • Rodent stereotactic surgery experience
  • Rodent behavior experience
  • Experience using viral vectors and/or optogenetics
  • Lab supply ordering/inventory experience
  • Slice or heterologous system patch clamp electrophysiology
