Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Division of Information Technology (IT) strengthens and supports the University's mission of exemplary teaching and learning, scholarly and creative research, and effective engagement and public service by providing the information technology infrastructure, software, hardware, and support to achieve the University's strategic goals. IT is composed of four departments which work with the university community to provide the information technology support and services required to realize operational excellence, integrate advanced technology, and create efficient and effective technology solutions.
Description of Work
The primary purpose of the IT System Administrator I role is to provide system management, troubleshooting, administration and maintenance for all IT related Systems that fall within the Administrative Computing domain including but not limited to the university Learning Management System ( LMS). The System Administrator will analyze and support the implementation and maintenance of various business applications used across the institution. They will collaborate with stakeholders to identify requirements and ensure applications meet operational needs. They will monitor application performance and recommend enhancements or solutions to improve functionality.
Primary LMS duties will include but are not limited to the following: LMS System Administration & Configuration

  • This position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day administration of the Canvas LMS, including user accounts, course enrollments, permissions and integrations.
  • Configure system settings, update course structures, and ensure proper roles and access rights for all users.
  • Implement and manage Canvas updates, new features, and third-party integrations.


Technical Support & Troubleshooting

  • Provide first-level and escalated support for Canvas related issues, diagnosing and resolving technical problems.
  • Collaborate with Canvas and other departments to resolve complex issues and ensure minimal disruption to users.
  • Maintain comprehensive support documentation and user guides.

System Optimization & Improvement

  • Identify and implement best practices to enhance the functionality and user experience of the Canvas LMS.
  • Research new features, tools, and third-party applications that could benefit the institution.
  • Collaborate with academic and IT teams to align the LMS with institutional goals and improve digital learning experiences.

This role will be involved in larger projects and other duties as assigned.

This is a full-time position with the possibility of a 100% remote working arrangement.
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position

  • Experience with the installation and maintenance of client/server and/or web/hosted software systems.
  • Strong analytical skills in identifying and resolving technical problems.
  • Basic networking and web server knowledge.
  • Strong working knowledge of web-based applications and learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard, etc.).
  • Experience with Banner, Structured Query Language (SQL), X/HTML, CSS, JavaScript (DHTML)
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts in non-technical terms.
  • Excellent customer service and support-oriented approaches.
  • Confident in managing multiple simultaneous initiatives with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, highly dynamic, team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Minimum Training and Experience
A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a closely related degree from an appropriately accredited institution and 0 to 2 years of experience in enterprise system administration or a closely related area; or an Associate's degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Engineering Technology, or Network Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and 2 to 4 years of experience in enterprise system administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
Management Preferences
It is the preference of management that the candidate has experience as a LMS administrator.
