Purpose: The Environmental Assistant is responsible for assisting in the review of sites of environmental contamination. This position works as a member of a team to complete environmental reports by creating figures, data tables and locating site files. The Assistant will log pollution incident reports into a database and forward reports to other team members for follow-up. This position will aid with meeting the unit's goals by tracking workplans and sending reminders of required tasks and completion dates to team members. The Environmental Assistant will have some knowledge of chemistry and be able to prioritize and concurrently work on multiple assignments.



Duties and Responsibilities:

Duty 1: Record Pollution Incident Reports



  • Record pollution incident reports in a database.
  • Reports requiring follow- up will be forwarded to an Environmental Site Review Specialist for further action.
  • Forward reports on to other team members for follow-up.
  • Record outcomes from follow-up in database.



Duty 2 Review site files from sites of environmental contamination



  • Perform a preliminary review of site files, filing out required information in a database.
  • Partner agencies to obtain missing files and record information in the database regarding the missing files.



Duty 3 Assist in the preparation of reviews of site files.



  • Assist in the creation of data tables and figure for site review files.
  • Assist in the scheduling and preparation of weekly site discussions with team members to present site reviews.



Duty 4 Vapor Intrusion program coordination



  • Track activities in the Annual Plan of Work (APOW) for Vapor Intrusion.
  • Send reminders to individuals to complete require tasks.
  • Prepare a short report progress report of APOW at weekly site discussion meetings so that work can be modified to meet goals.
  • Work with team members to develop a refusal process and mitigation tracking.
  • Coordinate and record other activities as they arise.



Duty 5 Complete and participate in training activities, exercises and other duties



  • Complete 40-hour HazMat training.
  • Complete National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command courses leading to the Michigan Professional Emergency Manager (PEM) certification.
  • Complete various vapor intrusion courses.
  • Complete a selection of courses from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).
  • Complete MDHHS and MPHI training courses.
  • Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.
  • All other duties as assigned.



Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Education typically acquired through completion of high school. Required. Possession of a Bachelor of Science degree in a physical, biological, or environmental science with credits in chemistry preferred. A Bachelor of Science degree in a physical, biological, or environmental science with credits in chemistry highly preferred.

Experience: No experience required.

  • Knowledge of basic chemistry nomenclature.
  • Ability to learn and retain training material through virtual and in-person training sessions.
  • Ability to maintain records and document reports in accordance with departmental guidance.
  • Ability to prioritize and concurrently work on multiple assignments.
  • Ability to collaborate and work with peers and other agencies.



Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Standard office environment and physical requirements typical of an office position. Requires valid vehicle operator's license and may include occasional travel within the State, including overnights.



RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: No assigned responsibility.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position supports activities that are important functions of the Environmental Health Bureau. These results of these activities will help assure that Michigan communities are protected from the hazards of vapor intrusion, non-biological substances in groundwater, and other chemical hazards in the environment. This position will provide support to key professional staff with duties related to this activity and will support other similar activities within DHHS. This position interacts with the public, local health departments and other State of Michigan agencies via meetings, telephone conversations, and on-site visits.
