Position Summary

Description:
The University of New Mexico
Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a highly motivated clinical Research
Coordinator to join our team.

The Department of Neurosurgery
runs a variety of clinical research studies that include externally sponsored
studies, clinical trials, investigator-initiated studies, pilot studies,
instrumentation studies, drug studies, registries and departmentally mandated
data bases.

This position involves a large
amount of paperwork revolving around the Internal Review Board (IRB)
applications and renewals, data entry for study databases, and pre-award
applications.

The following details a list of
many of the roles and responsibilities the successful candidate will work on:

  • Enrolls patients into clinical studies which requires sensitive interaction with patients and families.
  • Processes samples provided by surgeons for future use in studies
  • Coordinates and administers a funded research study/activity or group of associated activities.
  • Assists in project planning and ensures that pre-established work scope, study protocol, and regulatory requirements are followed.
  • Establishes and maintains budgets and fiscal controls for the project, and assists in the development of grant proposals.
  • Recruits and coordinates research subjects, as appropriate, and serves as the principal administrative liaison for the project.
  • Oversees and coordinates the provision of administrative and staff services to investigators.
  • Develops and maintains record keeping systems and procedures.
  • Meet and enroll patients in the staging area of the operating room.
  • Interacts with nurses, patients, allied health personnel and physicians in the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit and department of Neurosurgery.
  • Arrive as early as 5:00 AM in order to be available to conduct studies prior to surgery in the operating room.

The successful candidate
will be required to cover the pager for 24 hours including being on call on the
weekends and holidays, all of which will be shared between the two clinical
research coordinators; the research manager may act as a back-up as
needed.

Conditions of Employment
  • Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Additional health screenings may be required, dependent on the nature of the research conducted, as determined by Employee Occupational Health Services.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in science.
  • Strong to advanced skills with Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the IRB such as submitting work, completing applications according to protocols, writing subject consent forms, tracking items throughout the year, annual resubmissions, and closing studies.
  • Experience working with physicians and administrators from multiple departments.
  • Experience recruiting and working with seriously injured patients/subjects and their family.
  • Experience following and enforcing a medical protocol.
  • Experience in any type of neuroscience.
