Position Description

Provides specialized retention outreach and support services to students and serves as an Academic First Responder to at-risk students. Communicates with students digitally and in-person to provide holistic student support including academic development plans, resource referrals, and academic and career goal setting. Works directly with an academic college and participates in ongoing training and professional development to effectively support student success.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Provide high-touch elements of retention outreach and support to undergraduate students, with a focus on supporting underrepresented, low-income, and first-generation students.
  • Proactively identifies and assists students in underrepresented or underserved populations.
  • Utilize technology such as alerts, probationary statuses, account holds, low mid-term grades, and other markers to identify student retention concerns and facilitate successful interventions.
  • Coordinate communication with faculty and staff regarding alerts and connects students with appropriate resources to increase their likelihood of personal and academic success.
  • Maintain accurate records of outreach and student meetings, such as project data and other key data for departmental reporting.
  • Work with other campus departments to build relationships to provide student support on a continuous basis.
  • Other administrative responsibilities intended to accomplish individual and departmental goals may include serving students during drop-in hours or overseeing a small team of student mentors.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in area of expertise or closely related area required. Three years of experience in planning, developing, or implementing programs/projects or research grants. Additional education may substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree in education, counseling, human sciences, social work, or appropriate field related to grant objectives
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience with college student outreach, advising, or student success for college students required
  • Direct experience providing student support services for Hispanic, underrepresented, low-income, first-generation, and minoritized students
  • Direct experience providing programming related to academic and non-cognitive skills, college, career, financial aid, and economic literacy to college students
  • Demonstrated experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and outstanding customer service with students, staff, families, and community partners.
  • Demonstrated experience building community partnerships; program development, coordination, and implementation; promoting university student programs and services.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising student staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategy, goal setting, action planning, and project management.
  • Direct professional experience working with student retention, student engagement, student outreach, academic advising/counseling, tutoring programs, mentorship, or similar programs for historically underserved low-income college students who are first-generation college students.
  • Demonstrated professional experience in managing budgets
  • Demonstrated skill in utilizing various techniques to include Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and web-based data systems
  • Demonstrated ability to create reports, assessments, and outcomes-based reports
  • Demonstrated skill in managing large scale-budgets
