What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Navigation Guidance and Control department is seeking a Computer Engineer with practical applications experience involving things that fly, preferably rockets.

We are currently developing the real-time flight control system solutions for various rockets, missiles, and reentry bodies that require applied computer and electrical engineering expertise. We work closely with other Sandia organizations to develop and field-test these type systems on relatively short timelines that offer opportunities to launch frequently. Our current multi-disciplinary team comprised of Aerospace, Electrical, and Computer Engineers requires additional computer engineers to execute the current and anticipated future body of work.

We seek entry level personnel with a penchant for system level flight applications who want to grow into and assume leadership roles. We are looking to add team members who love a good challenge and take satisfaction in supporting multi-disciplinary team accomplishments.

On any given day, you may be asked to:

  • Design and implement avionic flight components supporting flight systems applications

  • Design and implement avionic tester apparatus

  • Support realization of hardware-in-the-loop hardware and software emulators

  • Test avionic components and flight control subsystems in relevant environments

  • Travel to the launch range to support vehicle flight test preparations

  • Perform gathering and analysis of data using tools such as Matlab and LabView

  • Develop and apply Simulink models to real time simulation systems

  • Apply specialized test equipment, such as GPS Satellite Constellation Simulators, in high fidelity simulation systems

  • Interact with valued sponsors and fellow National Team members

Periodic travel may be required to support field integration and flight system test activities. Such activities typically occur at rocket launch facilities located in Alaska, Hawaii, and Virginia. Associated trip durations range from a few days to several weeks depending on the assigned role and responsibilities. Due to the nature of the work, this candidate must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$95,400 - $185,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A bachelor's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering from an ABET accredited university

  • Curriculum experience including analog and digital design, microprocessor applications, electromagnetic theory, communications, and controls

  • Educational lab experience with the use of common tools such as oscilloscopes, logic probes, and logic analyzers

  • Software programming experience with either C, C++, Java, or Python; or Matlab Scripting language

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • (Master's or PhD) degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering

  • Applications experience with real-time embedded software engineering at the hardware level, including I/O driver software, interrupt service routines, FPGA applications, and networking protocols

  • Strong background in Radio Frequency (RF) circuits and transmit/receive systems

  • Experience in application of fundamental Systems Engineering principles

  • Proven verbal and written communication skills

About Our Team:

The Navigation Guidance and Control and Sensing (NGC&S) Department, 05444, provides technology solutions and support to development projects within the Integrated Military Systems Program at Sandia. Hardware and software technologies are developed, integrated, and tested to provide flight control solutions for missiles and hypersonic reentry platform applications. Typically, these systems support the Missile Defense Agency, Army, Navy, and other Department of Defense Agencies. We are focused on maturing next-generation technologies and our applications cover a broad spectrum of applications including GPS and inertial navigation, alternative-navigation sensors, communication and flight termination systems, advanced aerodynamically controlled vehicles, maneuvering hypersonic vehicles, and ballistic missile systems. Related applications require the extensive use of real time embedded computers and custom real-time software for the realization of fully integrated flight control system solutions. The NGC group is significantly involved inmodeling and simulation activities in support of these same application areas. The department strives to provide leadership to the Laboratory and the Nation in the creative development, use, and application of both NGC and mod/sim technologies. The NGC Department staff pride themselves in team accomplishments, professional development, and the mentorship of others.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
