Amend at UCSF in the UCSF Division of Health Equity and Society seeks to recruit a Special Academic Projects Coordinator to manage all aspects of select Amend academic programs focused on public health-focused prison transformation and reform in the U.S. The Special Academic Projects Coordinator will coordinate all organizational and operational activities for these academic programs at the discretion of the director (all taken together are equivalent in workload to a mid-sized academic program). They will coordinate all major program components and operational requirements, including management, supporting program development, program delivery, and program evaluation duties as needed by the Director. Duties might also include developing and organizing conferences and other public forums and other tasks at the discretion of the PI.

The Special Academic Projects Coordinator programs will require knowledge in at least one of the following areas of focus is required: prison policy, practice, or reform and/or public, environmental or occupational health. Knowledge in at least one or more related areas, including conditions of prison confinement in the U.S.; public health and human rights; understanding and addressing the needs of medically or socially marginalized populations; labor relations and/or movement organizing; best practices and human rights standards related to imprisonment; and/or research methodology is required. Superb skills and independence in writing, organization, and communication are required. Program management skills (including financial management of complex program budgets and defining and achieving clearly defined program objectives) are preferred but not required.

Under the supervision of the Director, the Special Academic Projects Coordinator will have responsibility for the overall coordination and support of all administrative operations, program design and implementation of the group's select academic programs. The Special Academic Projects Coordinator will have responsibility for coordinating activities, working with the impact evaluation team to set and measure health and related outcomes, and reporting progress to the program Director across multiple assigned projects. Other duties related to academic programs as assigned by PI.

The Special Academic Projects Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that program reporting requirements related to their assigned project sites are met across a range of funders, including the NIH, individual donors, and large and small foundations. Finally, the Special Academic Projects Coordinator is responsible for identifying future partnership and program implementation opportunities, preparing strategic planning documents related to new opportunities under the guidance of the PI, and supporting competitive grant and other funding applications as assigned by the PI.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $69,700 - $109,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Division of Health Equity and Society (DHES) at San Francisco General Hospital is part of the UCSF Department of Medicine. The DHES carries out innovative programming and research to prevent and treat chronic disease in populations for whom social conditions often conspire to both promote various chronic diseases and make their management more challenging. The Division is home to the Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative (BHHI) which provides accurate, timely policy-oriented research about homelessness for local, state, and national policymakers and practitioners. The Division is also home to Amend, a public health and human rights focused program that works in prisons and jails to reduce the debilitating health effects of these facilities on residents and staff alike, while simultaneously joining policy makers and community leaders to work towards decarceration and a better, new system of accountability and healing with human rights and health at its center.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or public health/policy or related area and three or more years of relevant experience and /or equivalent education / experience (including lived experience).
  • Academic background and experience in public care among historically marginalized populations, environmental justice, prison conditions of confinement, prison healthcare practice and policy; and/or labor movements.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of criminal justice reform and public health principles and practices, health policy, labor organizing and/or commnity activism and mobilization
  • Exceptional writing, organizational, and communication skills
  • Experience in project leadership
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
  • Superior professionalism, ability to partner effectively with diverse stakeholders
  • Established skill and experience coordinating complex projects and/or partnerships
  • Proven ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects/programs at once (often with competing deadlines/demands)
  • Excellent Excel, Microsoft Office, and video conferencing skills
  • Ability to travel nationally & internationally to achieve program goals

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in grant-writing, managing budgets and program staff
  • Background of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
