Overview
The Academic Advisor Supervisor strategically oversees all advising activities in the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences (CAAS) under the direction of the Associate Dean of Academic Programs and Student Services. The position provides strategic vision and oversight of the college's academic advisors, which includes hiring, training, evaluating, and organizing professional development. The position oversees the college's peer advisors, student ambassadors, and undergraduate teaching fellows. They advise prospective and current CAAS students for select undergraduate academic programs. The position's duties also include the CAAS graduation ceremony and other essential college events and programming.

Responsibilities
  • Strategically lead and supervise CAAS academic advisors and student advising team.
  • Develop and implement college advising strategies that promote student success, retention, and timely graduation.
  • Hire, train, evaluate, and develop academic advisors and student advisors.
  • Utilize data analytics to assess the effectiveness of advising programs and to drive decisions for improvement.
  • Conduct regular advising meetings and professional development events to ensure best practices and knowledge of changes to academic programs.
  • Assist advisors with complex student cases such as academic probation, major changes, and graduation planning.
  • Advise prospective and current students in select undergraduate academic programs.
  • Conduct annual performance and objectives reviews with academic advisors.
  • Foster a welcoming environment, a collaborative culture, and an attitude of continuous improvement and success within the advising team.
  • Oversee the CAAS advising budget, leave reports, and other required documentation.
  • Collaborate with CAAS faculty and administration to assess and improve student advising services.
  • Prepare advising reports and presentations for college administration.
  • Communicate with the Associate Dean and Dean about advising issues and about articulating concerns to other USU agencies.
  • Advocate for student needs within the college and across the university, and serve on college and university advising-related committees.
  • Lead the planning and implementation of the college graduation ceremony.
  • Perform other job-related duties, as assigned.

The Academic Advisor Supervisor reports to the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Student Services and directly supervises 10 academic advisors in the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree plus four years of academic advising experience (such as advising, mentoring, or otherwise working with students)


Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years of related administrative experience.
  • Broad knowledge of USU academic programs, general education and graduation requirements, student services, university policies and procedures, academic standing, and other related policies.
  • Knowledge of advising theory and creativity in providing alternatives in the delivery of advising services to students.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of best supervisory practices and ability to supervise staff.
  • Knowledge and understanding of a specialized area/program/process of advising.
  • Ability to lead training and day-to-day efforts of advising staff.
  • Ability to work with students in 1:1 or group advising settings.
  • Ability to assess the success of programs/coordination areas and manage budgets.
  • Ability to learn and maintain current knowledge of complex program requirements, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in a variety of current and emerging technology platforms.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills, including excellent writing, editing, and public speaking
  • Ability to work independently, build relationships with external units, speak in front of large audiences, and communicate institutional policies, procedures, and language to the general population.
  • Ability to make complex decisions, identify issues within area of coordination, problem solve, resolve, and communicate issues and their resolutions with advisors and administrators.
  • Ability to use professional judgement in ambiguous situations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple demands and changing needs
  • Good organizational skills, including the ability to work well under pressure and with multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to foster a positive team environment.
