The Forensic Specialist position is a professional staff role within the Police Department, focused on crime scene processing, latent print analysis, lab processing, and NIBIN test fires and entries. This is a full-time benefited position. The position involves working four ten-hour shifts, primarily with Forensic Services Unit, part of the Criminal Investigations Division, and requires participation in an on-call rotation and the ability to work overtime when necessary.

Key Responsibilities include:



  • Crime scene processing: Collecting, documenting, and preserving evidence from crime scenes, with a focus on photography and latent print processing. Adhering to strict protocols for the collection and preservation of evidence to maintain chain of custody.
  • Latent print processing: Utilizing various enhancement techniques (e.g., powder dusting, fuming, chemical treatments, and alternate light sources) to develop latent prints from a variety of surfaces. Ensuring prints are processed for quality and visibility suitable for further analysis.
  • Evidence documentation: Maintaining accurate records of all processed crime scenes and evidence, including photographs, case notes, and detailed descriptions, ensuring that all information is properly logged, scanned, and stored in the police database.
  • Latent print comparison: Analyzing developed latent prints and comparing them to known or unknown records utilizing databases such as AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) to identify suspects or provide investigative leads.
  • Collaboration: Working with detectives, officers, other members of the police department, and external agencies to process evidence and support investigations.
  • Reporting and documentation: Ensuring thorough documentation of all forensic activities, including case notes, lab results, and enhancements applied to prints. Preparing reports for law enforcement and the courts.
  • Customer service: Providing professional and efficient service to law enforcement personnel, other departments, and external partners while assisting with the status of evidence and ongoing investigations.
  • Additional duties: Performing other forensic and administrative tasks as assigned, supporting the department's efforts in criminal investigations. The role requires on-call rotation and flexibility to work overtime when needed, often during nights, weekends and holidays


The ideal candidate for this position will have: / Key Responsibilities:



  • A solid background in crime scene processing, latent print processing, latent print analysis, experience with test fires and entries into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, with hands-on experience in documentation, collection, and preservation of evidence at crime scenes.
  • A passion for forensic science, attention to detail, and a commitment to providing high-quality investigations are crucial for success in this position
