Under supervision of the Public and Media Relations Office, this position assists with updating City websites, creating social media content, developing materials for print and digital newsletters, and supporting other communication projects. This position does not provide direction to other employees.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Write clear and captivating copy for use across various communication platforms.
  • Assist with day-to-day updates to the City's website, ensuring accuracy, clarity and adherence to ADA standards.
  • Conduct web audits to identify outdated information and suggest improvements for a better user experience.
  • Create, schedule and post engaging social media content that highlights City events, services and initiatives.
  • Monitor social media channels for public interaction, responding to inquiries or comments in a timely and professional manner.
  • Develop materials for print and digital newsletters.
  • Operates under the City of Allen's core values of People First, Respect, Integrity, Deliver and Excel.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Education and experience that provide the necessary knowledge and skills may also be considered, but a typical way to qualify is by obtaining:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 9 year experience in communication, marketing or related field preferred.
  • Associates Degree with 5 years experience in communication, marketing or related field preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree with 1 year of experience in communication, marketing or related field preferred.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Safe driving record andValid Texas Driver's License
  • Clear criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen

Supervision Exercised:
General Supervision: Work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards; autonomy is granted at the service or program level; work is subject to general and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Hours/Work Schedule:

  • This is a full-time non-exempt position with benefits.
  • Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Some hybrid work permitted after 6 months of employment.
  • Schedule maybe modified if department needs arise.
  • May be required to work overtime if needed.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This position is classified assedentaryand requires the physical ability to perform the essential functions of the role. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform these functions. Typical physical demands include:

  • Primarily sitting, with occasional walking or standing to access files or office areas
  • Occasional bending, reaching, or stretching to retrieve materials or supplies
  • Lifting or carrying items weighing up to 10-15 pounds, such as files or office supplies
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, filing, copying, and operating office equipment
  • Adequate vision and hearing to review documents and effectively communicate with staff and the public

Work is primarily performed in an office setting, with occasional work outside the office during programs, meetings, or special events. The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.


SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Knowledge of:

  • Website content management systems.

  • UX (User Experience) best practices.

  • Variety of social media platforms.

  • Email marketing platforms.

  • City and department management policies and procedures.

  • Basic graphic design software (Canva, Adobe, etc.)

  • Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment
Skills in:
  • Crafting excellent written communication across various mediums, including print, websites, and social media.
  • Effective oral and written communications.
  • Organize, prioritize, track, and manage multiple projects, assignments, and tasks.
  • Identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.
  • Work well within a team and in group problem-solving situations; use reason even when dealing with emotional topics.
  • Developing empathetic, user-focused messages
  • Identifying process improvements that enhance user experiences.
  • Operating a computer utilizing a variety of business software
  • Experience with journalistic writing, including AP Style, is preferred.
