Museum of Anthropology in the College of Arts & Science

Job Description

The University of Missouri's Museum of Anthropology is looking for a dedicated Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Coordinator to join our team! This full-time role offers the opportunity to work closely with Native American Tribes, helping to honor their ancestors and cultural traditions through the respectful care and repatriation of ancestors and cultural items.

As the NAGPRA Coordinator, you will work directly with the Museum's Director and play a key role in ensuring our commitment to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. We're seeking someone who understands cultural sensitivity, listens to tribal representatives with respect and care, and is highly organized to manage this important work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Communicate with tribes for consultations and repatriations
  • Conduct in-depth cultural affiliation research
  • Aid the Director in developing Notices for submission to the Federal Register
  • Digitize documents to be shared with tribes
  • Write reports for grant work
  • Prepare summary reports and work with biological anthropologists
  • Organize logistics for meetings with tribes, and with team members
  • Evaluate information on archaeological collections and applicability to NAGPRA
  • Rehouse and photograph artifacts with cultural sensitivity in mind
  • May develop, prepare, and coordinate grant applications and grant-related activities to obtain funding for NAGPRA projects and related work
Shift

This position requires the candidate to work in-person Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in related/ relevant area or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven understanding of the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA - 25 U.S.C. * 3001-13) and it's accompanying regulations (43 C.F.R. * 10.1-.17) is required
  • A bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Museum Studies, Native American Studies, Historic Preservation, or other related field
  • One year of direct experience working on NAGPRA compliance
  • Ability to work and make decisions independently and have effective communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, willingness to function as part of a team, have tact and discretion with sensitive matters, and a strong work ethic
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $18.50 to $23.00
