Position Description:

The Department of Surgery - Division of Surgical Oncology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to work as part of a multidisciplinary health care team, providing a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for the patients of the consultative inpatient and outpatient services located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin primarily at Froedtert Hospital Cancer Center and Drexel Town Square Health Center.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.

At the Medical College of Wisconsin, the only academic medical center in Eastern Wisconsin, a team of nationally and internationally recognized surgeons work collaboratively to provide state of art personalized care. Surgeons in the Division of Surgical Oncology are part of multidisciplinary organ-based programs at our comprehensive Cancer Center. Our surgeons are among the highest-volume surgeons in both the state of Wisconsin and the country. The level of care provided by the programs has led patients to travel great distances to Froedtert & MCW.

In addition to dedicated clinical excellence, we participate in national and international clinical trials that offer patients novel, cutting-edge therapies. Some of the clinical trials offered are only available at our Cancer Center. Researchers in the division have also been recognized with funding from the National Institute of Health for their novel approaches to cancer care. The division is dedicated to basic science research and maintains initiatives utilizing patient's own tissues in the laboratory. This work holds the potential to identify the most meaningful treatments available.

In this role you will:

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring surgical intervention in an outpatient environment as a member of the Surgical Oncology team.
  • Collaborates with other consultative care teams and primary team in the management of melanoma/sarcoma and peritoneal based diseases.
  • Participates in preoperative and postoperative patient care. Provides follow-up/post-op care in the Clinical Cancer Center clinic.
  • Privileged to perform procedures as identified by the collaborating surgeon that are beyond core privileges.
  • Educates patients and families on preoperative and postoperative care.
  • Develops expertise in cross continuum care management and treatment interventions specific to this patient population.
  • Writes accurate and timely consultative and progress notes.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
  • Facilitates and communicates with patient, family, and other care organizations to promote continuity across the continuum of care.
  • Attends required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including CMS and The Joint Commission.
  • Evaluates quality outcomes for the patients under the care of surgical oncology care teams through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes.

Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information
  • Write accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders
  • Develop pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitor effectiveness of plan of care
  • Educate patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Perform procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Document within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborate and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.
  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
  • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.

Monday-Friday. Scheduling flexibility required to provide for an appropriate level of patient care coverage.



Position Requirements:

Preferred Experience: Oncology, Surgical Nursing, OR, and/or Critical Care experience of 3+ years preferred.

Minimum Education:

Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing
Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies

Minimum Requirements: *or eligible

Wisconsin RN License Certification by NCCPA
