About the Position

As a Paralegal within the Appeals, Election Law, Public Records, & Tax Practice Group of the Civil Services Division, your primary focus involves processing bankruptcy and tax complaints for the Maricopa County Attorney and county clients, including reviewing and drafting responsive pleadings. In this role, you will also work with colleagues on e-discovery issues that may arise in their cases while representing county clients in state and federal courts. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work on litigation matters.

About the Civil Services Division

The Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office serves as a law firm that provides legal representation and advice to the Maricopa County government, including its elected officials, departments, and employees. Our work involves defending legal actions, lawsuits, and claims brought against County entities, including Section 1983, tort, election, and tax litigation. We also provide legal advice to County officials on various public law topics. Additionally, we process public records requests for the Maricopa County Attorney. Our division has four practice groups: Litigation; Government Advice & Elected Officials; Human Resources, Behavioral Health, & Probate Group; and Appeals, Election Law, Public Records, & Tax.

With this opening, the Civil Services Division is looking to add a Paralegal to its Appeals, Election Law, Public Records, & Tax Practice Group. Although the Paralegal will be specifically assigned to the Appeals, Election Law, Public Records, & Tax Practice Group, the Paralegal could be called upon to assist on tasks or projects in any one or more of these Groups.

We Require

  • Two years of experience as a paralegal, legal assistant, or related work

  • Associate's degree in paralegal studies or legal assistance OR

  • Associates in an unrelated field + Certificate in Paralegal Studies - 2 years of experience needed OR

  • Bachelor's or higher in paralegal studies, legal assistance, or legal studies - no experience needed OR

  • Bachelor's or higher in an unrelated field + an Associate or Certification in paralegal studies - no experience needed

NOTE: The Maricopa County Attorney's Office requires a thorough background check of all successful candidates and is authorized to test prospective employees for the presence of illegally accessed drugs. Testing is conducted once an offer has been extended and prior to placement.

Job Contributions

  • Under the direction of staff attorneys, assist with the preparation of a variety of legal documents, including complaints, answers, disclosures, discovery, petitions, subpoenas, briefs, legal opinions, pleadings, motions, summons, dispositions notices, and various correspondences

  • Analyze, organize, review, and verify records and other documents obtained through the discovery process

  • Assist in updating and maintaining the database/case management system

  • Organize and maintain documents in electronic document management system

  • Perform legal and factual research

  • Review and edit documents for accuracy

  • Review, organize, index, and Bates stamps pertinent documents for disclosure/discovery and for use in courts and tribunals

  • Utilizes computerized research tools

  • File pleadings, motions, and briefing with courts and tribunals, as needed

  • Review and edit tax, bankruptcy, and appellate motions and briefing for accuracy, as needed

Working Conditions

  • Office setting in high volume, fast-paced environment with frequent stressful situations

  • May require long periods of sitting while completing paperwork, standing and moving about while performing duties

  • Ability to travel to and from various county locations for court appearances, meetings, and training, using personal or county-owned vehicles

  • Ability to move up to 20 pounds floor to waist and pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds a distance of up to 100 feet

  • After a successful six-month period after hire, employees are eligible to telework up to 16 hours per week with supervisor approval. The ability to telework depends on the employee's position and business needs
