Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Promotion, Public Health, Medical Technology, Health Sciences, or a health-related field

  • An equivalent combination of post-secondary education andexperienceconducting field investigations, community outreach, or case management may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis

We Also Value

  • Experience working as a Communicable Disease Investigator for a local public health department or state health services agency

  • Experience working with the public conducting health-related field investigations for communicable diseases

  • Experience working in a medical field drawing blood, doing case investigative work, and/or interviewing or counseling clients

  • Experience working with various socioeconomic groups performing counseling or health education services

  • Experience working with STDs or epidemiological data related to STDs

  • Bilingual skills in both English and Spanish

Job Contributions

  • Conducts field and telephone investigations with utmost regard to confidentiality by researching, identifying, locating, and contacting individuals with a confirmed, or potential case of an infectious disease

  • Refers clients to a medical provider for sexually transmitted disease (STD) diagnosis and treatment

  • Interviews clients who have tested positive for an STD to elicit names and contact information of sexual partners and obtain epidemiological data, such as risk factors and previous disease status

  • Connects clients to appropriate agencies for follow-up care and education

  • Locates, notifies, and interviews the sexual partners of clients who have tested positive for an STD

  • Follows-up with confirmed STD-positive cases to ensure the individual is receiving medical care

  • Creates and maintains case investigation documents, records, and reports

  • Conducts community outreach activities targeting high-risk communities, including registering clients for testing, performing venipuncture, and obtaining specimens

Working Conditions

  • Position requires extensive fieldwork in diverse communities, driving to various locations within Maricopa County, in a personal or county vehicle, in all weather conditions, walking long distances, climbing stairs, and reacting quickly to potentially unsafe situations(mileage reimbursement is available)

  • Must be able to participate in emergency response training as scheduled and be available to respond as directed in the event of a public health emergency

  • Valid Arizona driver's license is required upon hire

  • Within six months of hire, the employee must complete the CDC STD modular training program and pass the oneweek Passport to Partner Services course sponsored by the CDC

  • Within one month of hire, all employees are required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
