Job Summary

Please note: on-site as needed for meetings and/or customer engagement. Flexible to telecommute with the exception of onsite meetings for team events and/or meeting with customers. The onsite expectations of the role remain flexible and could change periodically. Travel to work at a UCSF location is a commuting expense, even in situations where travel is beyond normal commuting distances. The policy does not allow reimbursement for employee commuting expenses from home to the worksite.
We're looking to have a start date: 3/1/2025.


Reporting directly to the Academic Shared Services Director, this position is responsible for managing a shared services team that collaborates with the schools, departments, and business units to deliver academic HR service and ensure compliance with UCSF policy and procedures. Through the management of team members, the incumbent will be responsible for administering academic personnel policies and procedures that span a comprehensive array of functional areas including: appointment, advancement, compensation and benefits including administration of Health Sciences Compensation plans, salary administration and equity; employee relations, labor relations. In partnership with the Shared Services Director, the manager establishes plans and goals to provide optimal customer service and achieve University objectives for the academic personnel function of the integrated AP/HR shared service delivery organization. The manager will be held accountable to manage client relationships and establish and adhere to service level agreements and related metrics. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel, and serious delays in overall schedules.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $225,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The HR Shared Services Center consists of teams of Staff HR and Academic HR, and HR Operations who partner with UCSF campus departments, the UCSF HR Specialty Center, and the Office of Academic Personnel, to deliver a comprehensive array of HR services designed to attract, develop and retain the diverse workforce talent necessary to support UCSF as the world's preeminent health sciences innovator.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS and minimum of 8 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three years or more of supervisory experience that includes oversight of Human Resources activities
  • Supervisory and coaching skills
  • Has a broad knowledge of organizational and systemwide academic HR personnel policies and applicable laws and regulations
  • Strong knowledge of compensation policies and procedures and employment law related to academic employees as well as understanding of local and client department interpretation and implementation
  • Is a strong communicator with a diversity of communication styles; may make oral or written presentations
  • Makes decisions regarding hiring, evaluating, and development of subordinates; determines the best way of achieving unit goals
  • Has strong management skills that include collaboration, coaching and developing subordinates; ability to build relationships.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of the unit goals and how this position supports those goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle extremely difficult or volatile situations/individuals effectively
  • Ability to interpret academic personnel policies in order to advise department managers and chairs on appropriate action to meet business and strategic goals
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze employment contracts and collective bargaining agreements

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience with website content management
  • Experience with Customer Relationship Management Systems (CRM)
  • Has direct knowledge of specific functions in the university's HR management information systems
