Overview

A Facilities Maintenance Technician 3 - Welder, under general direction and/or using detailed procedures/work instructions, safely welds metal components for the purpose of fabrication or repair of products, such as machine parts, plant equipment, motors and generators, according to layouts, blueprints, P&IDs, or work orders, using a variety of welding techniques and equipment. Performs related tasks such as thermal cutting, grinding, and repairs, along with a variety of other fabrication methods for example: Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW).



Responsibilities

Work involves operations in accordance with procedures for preventative and corrective maintenance to include but not limited to the following:

    Working from blueprints, fabrication drawings, layouts, P&IDs or other specifications, locating and troubleshooting in standard systems or equipment.
  • Weld components using semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions.
  • Use measuring equipment to check tolerances or align components.
  • Troubleshoot and correct equipment malfunctions, perform planned preventive maintenance and overhaul maintenance of moderate complexity using diagnostic equipment for which training has been completed and of a routine nature,
  • Select and order materials for routine work, and maintain stock of materials,
  • Provides instruction, on-the-job assistance, and/or limited technical direction to employees at the same level, performing similar work,
  • Keeping the engines, machinery and equipment of the system in good working order; and,
  • Reviewing and implementing Lock-out Tag-out (LOTO} plans to ensure work is performed safely.

FMT 3 - Welder, under general supervision, may perform minor tasks as needed, including, but not limited to:

  • Performing administrative and other support duties.
  • Maintaining facilities in clean, safe and orderly condition.
  • Organizing interior and exterior of shop and other maintenance facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned to insure timely project execution.

Technician on-the-job training and expectation of proficiency will vary with their assigned duties.



Qualifications

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • A High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of industrial experience is required.
  • Evidence of prior certification in welding is required.
  • Certification in welding from American Welding Society (AWS) ASME Section IX and AWS D1.1 for: (1) Carbon Steel, Process SMAW and GTAW All Positions.
  • Able to select the proper filler material, welding electrode, and WPS for the application.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and excellent attention to detail are required.
  • Basic knowledge of computer systems and software programs for administrative duties such as email is required.

Preferred Responsibilities/Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED/TASC/ HiSET with at least ten (10) years of job- related experience or a bachelor's degree in a related field with at least eight (8) years of job-related experience.
  • Vocational/technical training beyond high school and ten (10) years of experience. Experience in exotic alloys.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be able to pass a post-offer, pre-placement drug test, physical examination, and medical history check.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check and have a clean motor vehicle report (MVR).
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the UMWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Able to work night, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

Work Environment

  • Majority of the workday is in a variety of environments including outdoors lab/research areas and inside administrative areas. Assists in performing maintenance, housekeeping, or administrative duties in a typical shop environment where certain hazards do exist.

Physical Demands

  • Lifting of up to 50 pounds is required.
  • Kneeling, standing, and walking, and use of speech/hearing abilities for communications, constant mental alertness.
  • Must be able to work according to schedule.

Integrated Safety Management

  • Observe and follow all corporate, federal, state and site environmental safety and health (ES&H) policies and procedures that pertain to the job classification being performed.
  • Perform only those tasks in which you have the required training, competence, knowledge, skills, and abilities to prevent injury to one's-self, other employees, the public, or the environment.
  • Hazard and situational awareness for ES&H risks associated with the work. Perform work safely in accordance with hazard controls.
  • Report all unsafe operations, and, if necessary, exercise stop-work authority in cases of imminent danger.
  • Keep office space, operating area, control room, mechanical room, warehouse etc. clean and orderly.
  • Attend all safety meetings and stay current with assigned required training.
  • Maintain active involvement in the introduction, revision, and/or promotion of ES&H/ISM program activities.

Hours of Work

  • This is typically an 8 hour per day daylight schedule. Response to urgent call outs at nights and on weekends is required as well as scheduled weekend/holiday outages to perform preventive and corrective maintenance, however these instances are very limited.
