Position Purpose

Under direct supervision, Public Safety Trainees will observe and provide assistance with the daily functions of the Arvada Police Department.
This is a paid internship program expected to last 12 weeks, working 40 hours per week.
*Interview process will include; completion of Personal History Questionnaire, polygraph and standard in-person interview

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Shadows and assists Arvada Police Department personnel in the performance of their duties.
- Provides clerical and administrative support.
- Completes ride-alongs with police officers and other units/bureaus.
- Attends training sessions and briefings to enhance the understanding of law enforcement principles, policies, and procedures.
- Attends special events by request (Teen Academy, Explorer Post, 4th of July Fireworks Display, etc.)
- Demonstrates an ability to understand and follow directions.
- Represents the Arvada Police Department in a positive and professional manner when interacting with the community.
- Must be detail-oriented, punctual and reliable.

SCOPE OF AUTHORITY:
- Public Safety Trainees will have no authority to act on behalf of the Arvada Police Department, and will only be in an observational role.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: No supervision will be exercised by interns. COMMUNICATION/WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Internal Contacts: Arvada Police Department personnel; City Attorney's Office; and other City staff. External Contacts: Under direct supervision, Public Safety Trainees may have contact with citizens, victim advocates, fire department personnel, emergency dispatch centers, and DA's office representatives. WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: The work environment/physical activities described here are representative of those a Public Safety Trainee could encounter while engaged in their role. Work is primarily performed in an office environment with moderate noise levels. The exception to this work environment will be when the Public Safety Trainee participates in ride-alongs. Ride-alongs might be scheduled with patrol, CIB, AMO, code compliance, crime scene detectives, and other Arvada PD work units. Public Safety Trainees may also be provided with an opportunity to participate in law enforcement-related training activities. Physical effort and activities include: occasional operation of a personal or City-owned motor vehicle to drive to and from meetings and other locations, such as sector stations. Public Safety Trainees must have the ability to talk, hear and listen, use their hands/fingers to type and handle, and feel or manipulate objects. There could be frequent sitting, standing, walking, and reaching. Public Safety Trainees must have the visual acuity to focus on details and make general observations and visual inspections. The position may require the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 10 pounds, and up to 25 pounds.

Qualifications - Working Environment / Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, LICENSE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE): The applicant must be currently attending or enrolled to attend college/university-level classes. The applicant must also possess a valid Colorado driver's license and be 18 years of age at the start of the Intern Program. Preferred Qualifications:
- Desire to work in the public safety field.
- Has a personal or professional association with the City of Arvada.
MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED: Requires use of computer and office equipment. Microsoft Word, Excel, Google, and G-mail software used along with the internet.
