Description

Description of Duties: The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook University invites applications for a non-tenure-track position in Marine Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, or Sustainability Studies as part of the SUNY Promoting Recruitment, Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion and Growth plus (PRODiG Plus) program. The PRODiG Plus program was created as a pipeline to facilitate postdoctoral fellows to enter tenure-track faculty positions at SUNY campuses. The incumbent will be initially hired into a two (2) year, 12-month non-tenure track faculty position at the lecturer level beginning in the fall of 2025, and will be mentored by a tenured faculty member most closely related to their research interests. A successful and productive candidate will have the opportunity to transition to a tenure-track position after two years.

Candidates must have demonstrated plans to contribute to inclusion, diversity and equity, excellence in innovative research, and will teach classes (estimated 1 per year) at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels, as well as mentor students. Their primary focus will be pursuing scholarly productivity.

* Eligible to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship.
* Ph.D. or relevant terminal degree from an accredited institution completed prior to start date.
* Demonstrate personal, academic, and/or work experience engaging with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or a commitment to facilitating and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the campus community. Such experience may include, but is not limited to, an academic/scholarly track record focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion; work, volunteer/unpaid/community service; or related experience/expertise in serving underserved or vulnerable areas and/or populations.

  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
  • Have a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Atmospheric Sciences, Marine Sciences, Sustainability Studies or related field in hand no later than August 2025.
  • Demonstrate personal, academic, and/or work experience engaging with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or a commitment to facilitating and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the campus community.


Such experience may include, but is not limited to, an academic/scholarly research track record that includes focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion; work, volunteer/unpaid/community service; or related experience/expertise in serving underserved or vulnerable areas and/or populations.

Preferred Qualifications:
Expertise in coastal marine and/or atmospheric processes and/or sustainability. Demonstrated research experience and/or publication productivity in area of expertise.

Preference will be given to candidates who are:



  • Current SUNY students, alumni, and/or Fellows
  • From a low-income background (e.g., Pell-eligible as undergraduates).
  • Were first generation college students (students whose parents have not earned a bachelor's degree).
  • Have overcome adversity.
  • Are AmeriCorps alumni.
  • Are veterans.
