Your Role With Us:

  • Performs staff bench workload responsibilities, setting high standards of performance.
  • All specimens are handled or collected appropriately as stated in the procedure manual(s). Specimens are stored properly. Has a thorough knowledge of specimen requirements for standard tests and has the knowledge of how to research specimen requirements and handling for procedures not routinely performed.
  • Knows basic functions of LIS and how to use them. Can trouble shoot problems using error log and multiple computer functions. Calls overdue test and pending logs at times specified in the procedure manual(s). Understands scheduling patients in the HER.
  • Assists with the phone as needed and answers promptly within three rings. Able to handle more than one call at a time. Maintains proper phone etiquette. Receives, records and relays messages accurately and in a timely fashion.
  • Independently performs and reports waived and moderately complex laboratory procedures under the direction of medical technologists; Maintains appropriate inventory levels, either through stocking or ordering, of items required for optimal departmental operations.
  • Responds to, documents and completes all PSA's assigned to the area at the discretion of the supervisor; Works with Supervisor and Leads to address QA issues in clinical environment.
  • Provides scheduling support as needed, tracks attendance, and reports policy violations to supervisors. Validates timecards and leads/educates team members. Collaborates with management to monitor daily workload, ensure adequate staffing, and optimize team performance.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and teamwork, effectively communicating task and department status to managers, supervisors and coworkers. Prioritizes work for optimal efficiency, adapting to changing workloads and staffing. Serves as a knowledgeable resource and educator, providing supportive and respectful guidance to staff and stakeholders.
  • Supports staff development through timely training coordination, IT system instruction, and continuing education program development. Resolves technical issues promptly and participates in conflict resolution/documentation. Provides constructive performance feedback, promoting growth and improvement.
  • Ensures a safe work environment by adhering to lab and patient safety protocols, infection control procedures, and personal protective equipment guidelines. Instructs staff on safety techniques and promotes best practices. Participates in quality assurance, performance improvement, and compliance with Hospital Safety Management Program initiatives. Supports workplace changes and updates procedures as needed.
  • Demonstrates self-motivation, seeking professional growth through independent problem-solving, extra assignments, and ongoing education. Actively participates in department activities, meets attendance standards, and maintains dependable attendance and productivity. Prioritizes teamwork and patient care excellence, using sound judgment and adhering to policies for absence reporting and scheduling.

    Background/Expertise:

    • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
    • One (1) year's laboratory training/experience in a clinical laboratory or minimum of 3 quarters of college level course work that includes laboratory activities.
    • Familiarity with medical terminology is considered a strong asset in this position.
    • Prior experience with Laboratory Information Systems and Hospital Information Systems is highly desirable.
    • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking. Requires regular exercise of independent judgment and decision-making skills.
    • Must be capable of light physical work which includes sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods of time. Lifting generally consists of items weighing less than 40 pounds.
    • Job may involve occasional exposure to infectious specimens, as well as other infectious and hazardous materials. Occasional exposure to noxious fumes may occur.
    • This work requires good corrected vision, the ability to identify and distinguish colors, the ability to do near point work at varying distances from the eye.
