Ability to: follow oral and written instructions; write legibly and deal effectively with the public sector; practice safe handling of cleaning agents with chemicals, cleaning equipment, storage and use of materials; complete tasks in a cooperative manner; work with the staff in maintaining a healthy environment and use good housekeeping techniques.

Able to perform cleaning operations that require continuous walking, reaching, bending, stooping, stair climbing.

Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
Make sure all areas of the assigned building(s) (inside and outside) are clean, neat, tidy and sanitary. General responsibilities include vacuum, dust, mop, wax and buff floors, clean windows and blinds, move furniture, sanitize restrooms, collect and sort recyclables, and perform special cleaning projects. Perform various cleaning tasks such as replenish paper supplies and soap in toilets, clean woodwork and baseboards, shift furniture to clean area, make minor repairs and report other repairs (replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, etc.), shovel snow from walks and drive as assigned. Operate motorized cleaning equipment (vacuum cleaners, wet vacs, buffers, scrub machines, etc.) and performs preventive maintenance on cleaning equipment to ensure operable. Strip wax, buff and care for tile and terrazzo floors. Apply workplace safety techniques while completing daily duties which may include mixing and use of chemicals. Assist in setting-up tables and chairs as needed. Perform related duties as required to maintain a healthy environment. Complete assignment and work with others in a courteous manner. Perform all duties as assigned under the supervision of a Zone Manager.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Physical Plant is responsible for providing services relative to buildings and grounds maintenance, utilities, transportation, trash removal, central receiving, recycling, disposition of surplus property and moving and hauling. In addition, the Physical Plant's expanding responsibilities include providing support services for the instruction and research programs to achieve the University's mission, goals and objectives. Maintain, improve and expand all campus buildings, campus image and educational opportunities for all people. More specifically, the functions involve energy conservation, building renovation/repair, occupational safety and health, landscape design, event planning, vehicle and equipment maintenance/repair, motor pool and housekeeping services to 44 academic buildings, 14 residence halls and seven farm buildings. Moreover, the Housekeeping Department provides housekeeping and custodial services to 44 academic buildings, and supervises housekeeping contractor for 14 residence halls.
Work Hours 3pm-12 midnight M-F; essential position required to report for emergencies (adverse weather - flooding, ice and snow removal, flooding)

Required Competency Knowledge - Technical
Duties
FLOOR MAINTENANCE (quarterly or as needed):
Strip, wax and buff floors
Sweep, dust mop or vacuum all floors, damp mop to remove spots and spills. Remove scuff and skid marks
Report any repair work that employees can detect
Shampoo carpet

Performs DAILY Housekeeping Tasks:
Replace burned out light bulbs and fluorescent tubes
Clean and sanitize restrooms:
Sweep, dust mop and spot mop floors
Clean sinks, mirrors, and glass surfaces
Empty sanitary napkin dispensers
Check and refill paper towel, soap and tissue dispensers; recheck and re-supply before leaving each day
Sweep stairs and landings and dust railings
Clean glass surfaces
Clean 15 feet outward around building entrance ways (to include snow removal and salt application)
Remove graffiti from surfaces
Clean & polish stainless steel surfaces (i.e., water fountains, kick plates and push plates)
Empty trash cans and ash urns
Clean the dock area

WORK REQUESTS: Fill out work request for any repairs that need to be handled in the building and give to supervisor daily.

RECYCLE: Inspect trash for recyclables; sort and place in appropriate containers, avoiding contamination; take to designated location inside/outside ob building for pickup by sanitation truck operator

Performs WEEKLY Housekeeping tasks:
Clean janitor's closet and equipment
Dust vents and Venetian blinds
Clean and dust office areas, conference rooms, to include file cabinets, desks, chairs, tables, and bookcases upholstered furniture, including underneath pillows and cushions
Dust window sills to the screens
Dust fixtures and moldings, (i.e., picture frames and other wall hangings)

Performs PROJECT WORK Scheduled by Supervisor:
Wash venetian blinds, windows and light fixtures
Clean tile and grout in restrooms
Remove graffiti from all surfaces
Work and set up for special events or emergencies cleanups as needed
Work overtime; work in other buildings as requested and performs all duties as assigned.
