The Position

Overview of US Medical:

In US Medical we focus on identifying medical care gaps, answering novel important scientific questions, and educating providers and payers. As a key pillar in the broader Genentech organization, Medical has a pivotal role in bridging internal partner functions (including Research, Product Development, Commercial, and Government Affairs) and collaborating across the dynamic health ecosystem to ultimately identify and close care gaps and deliver better patient outcomes, while making care more accessible and equitable for all.

Summary of the Role of Therapeutic Area Head:

The Therapeutic Area Head ("TAH") is a core member of Genentech's Scientific Leadership Team and responsible for providing strategic leadership and deep medical insights to drive scientific innovation for the company's therapeutic portfolio. This is a Vice President-level role and operates in an equivalent capacity as the Chief Medical Officer of a sizable biopharma enterprise. The TAH:

  • Plays a key role in new product planning and evaluation of new pipeline opportunities in partnership with our internal partners (Marketing, Market Access)

  • Applies an in-depth understanding of the medical strategy and relevant clinical, market and access landscapes, and leads the development of Therapeutic Area-specific priorities and relevant Strategic Medical Plans (SMPs) which are updated annually.

  • Partners with the Medical Pipeline Strategy Leadership Team within the Medical Network on realizing our Pipeline Strategy and Pipeline Investment Model.

  • Leads the Medical Network (Medical Directors aka Therapeutic Area Leads ("TALs"), Medical Science Directors) in developing evidence to understand appropriate use and the potential health economic impact of our medicine, advance comprehensive knowledge of our medical strategy and relevant clinical, market and access landscapes

  • Provides critical scientific input 1) as a member of the Therapeutic Area Squads(*) and 2) as a partner to Commercial in terms of scientific expertise.

  • Cultivates scientific relationships with Therapeutic Area experts and provides input to advocacy efforts with professional societies, Key Opinion Leaders, and guideline groups. Note that given the strategic, high-profile nature of this role, the TAH serves as a key medical spokesperson internally and externally

  • Understands and evaluates the organization's near- and long-term opportunities and constraints, and builds capabilities with a collaborative, enterprise mindset.

  • The TAH is expected to be a coach, strong servant leader, and individual contributor depending on needs of the organization, with demonstrated ability to build high performing teams

(*) A Therapeutic Area Squad is a small cross-functional team of senior leaders (usually 5 members) responsible for a therapy area or set of products that is accountable for generating the 5-year vision, integrated customer plan, identifying 90-day priorities and enabling small, self-governing teams to design and develop the best solution for the patient/customers. Team composition includes members from Medical, Field, Access, Marketing, and Commercial functions.

TAH Core Accountabilities:

1. Translate corporate strategy into integrated medical strategies for novel products leading to regulatory submissions and approvals

2. Engage internal and external partners and stakeholders to innovate and refine integrated medical strategies, prioritizing product opportunities and developing evidence generation plans for clinical validation and clinical utility

3. Serve as clinical expert in the evaluation of early stage products; partner with internal stakeholders to achieve optimal product design specifications to achieve optimal commercialization of marketed products

4. Collaborate in the design and conduct of clinical studies for product validation including oversight on preparation and review of relevant written documents and oversee the identification and recruitment of principal investigators for studies

5. Engage with life cycle management teams to speed the deployment of new products

6. Partner with Genentech's market access team to shape health plan coverage policies

7. Interact with regulatory teams, providing medical / scientific input into regulatory submissions; assist in developing and reviewing all submissions to regulatory authorities, and represent Genentech at key meetings

8. Partner with ecosystem(**) leadership teams, harness the collective expertise of the ecosystem team to engage effectively and compliantly across the ecosystem

9. Oversee translational efforts with partners and collaborators. Identify and provide guidance on opportunities to jointly promote data in collaboration with research and other strategic partners

10. Serve as a company spokesperson regarding clinical / medical matters. Lead company resources in addressing clinical and patient product-related inquiries

11. Be a strong mentor and coach for Medical Leads aka Therapeutic Area Leads ("TALs"), establish an inspiring team culture through continuous demonstration of leadership commitments

12. Act as a steward and guardian for high standards of compliance, ethics and safety

13. Demonstrate budget and headcount stewardship mindset in partnership with Finance and People & Culture, at the Squad and Medical levels, to deliver on maximum impact opportunities and apply resources responsibly to achieve our goals

14. Foster a culture that enables and requires employees at all levels to live our Operating Principles in all aspects of their work

(**) The ecosystems model focuses our organizational and territory model around local health care ecosystems with specialty roles. Each ecosystem is led by both a commercial and medical leader, both of whom have deep local health system knowledge and expertise. The ecosystem model aims to help health care systems improve patient experience and outcomes, support population health, and reduce costs through streamlined touchpoints and local expertise that better align with the way care is delivered in communities.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Doctoral-level education (MD, PhD, PharmD, DPN, etc.); Board Certification within therapeutic area preferred

  • 12-15 years of pharmaceutical / biotechnology industry experience - preferably in Medical Affairs or Product Development, or is a recognized expert in the field with demonstrable knowledge and experience engaging with industry

  • Experience leading entire disease area focused teams across different Therapeutic Areas, with an understanding of end-to-end activities of Medical, the role of Medical in relation to the enterprise organization, and experience in all phases of development

  • Sophisticated understanding of the evolving regulatory, medical practice and economic environments, and health equity considerations impacting Roche / Genentech both globally and within the US; have a thorough understanding of US regulatory / FDA requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and identify the needs of patients, providers and payers through credible use of health economic outcomes research and / or real-world evidence

  • Demonstrated experience in the application of various scientific technologies into translational research strategies

  • Responsible for representing Genentech at key executive exchanges and fostering relationships with top tier thoughts leaders in specific disease area of expertise

  • Substantive understanding and exposure to corporate legal and compliance groups, and demonstrates an understanding of issues related to, GCP, OIG and other guiding or controlling elements of our business. Complies with all laws, regulations, policies and procedures that govern the conduct of GNE activities

  • Strong knowledge and experience in digital and analytics and applications from an R&D and Commercial perspective

  • Previous people management experience is required with demonstrated ability to mentor and develop emerging leaders and build high performing teams in matrix organizations

  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills, strong work ethic with expectation of excellence of self and others, and ability to communicate with a diverse range of senior stakeholders

  • Finance and / or large-scale budget development, scenario planning, management and administration experience

  • Business travel, by air or car, is required for regular internal and external business meetings

  • This position is based in South San Francisco, CA

Salary:

  • The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $355,600 - $466,725. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for benefits.
