About the College/Unit/Department
In 2018, The UGA Tifton Campus began a yearlong Centennial celebration with various events to commemorate its 100th anniversary of providing updated research to the community.
Research is done on a wide range of commodities, including cotton, peanuts, vegetables and turf grass, all of which make agriculture the No. 1 industry in Georgia.
In 2004, a teaching program was initiated and it has been growing ever since. College-level instruction on campus is aimed at undergraduate and graduate-degree level study.

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Position Summary
Incumbent will conduct field and plasticulture studies on sustainable vegetable production. Studies may be conducted in the field or under protected conditions, such as a greenhouse, high tunnel or shade house. Work will include vegetable crop production from field preparation to harvest. The position will also involve vegetable production utilizing sustainable/organic practices such as cover crops, composting and organic fertilizers. Maintaining activity records, field data collection and pesticide records will also be part of the duties.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of vegetable production and plasticulture technology, including plastic mulches, shade houses and high tunnels
  • Familiarity with sustainable and organic vegetable production practices, including utilization of cover crops, composts and organic fertilizers
  • Knowledge and skill in the use and maintenance of farm equipment
  • Knowledge and skill in the proper use of pesticides
  • Strong knowledge and skill in the installation and management of drip irrigation systems for vegetable production
  • Ability to speak both English and Spanish

Vegetable Crop Management

  • Planting, which consists of manual planting in the greenhouse or in small plots for replication tests in the field
  • Coordinate plot layout and design, plot preparation, staking, planting, fertilizing, harvesting, weighing, scouting and applying pesticides
  • Calibrate sprayers, spreaders and injectors
  • Apply, mix, load and handle pesticides
  • Set up and operate irrigation
  • Apply experimental treatments to field and greenhouse research experiments
  • Order supplies

  • Collect and maintain plant evaluation records
  • Record data and maintain files related to research studies being conducted in the field and laboratory
  • Prepare summary reports of field activity
  • Keep records of pesticide use for both management of pests and application of treatments
