Job Description

General Summary:

This critical senior position will be responsible for leading the Packaging and Labeling group within the MS&T Finished Drug Product organization. Vertex is rapidly commercializing a pipeline of exciting small molecule (SM) and cell and gene therapy (CGT) programs. The head of this group is responsible for defining and delivering the global Packaging and Labeling strategy for all modalities across the organization, coordinating with drug product manufacturing, regulatory, device manufacturing, pharmaceutical sciences, clinical/commercial supply chain, logistics, and others. This role models leadership behaviors, builds an organization capable of ensuring future success, develops leaders, and drives efficiency and risk reduction into relevant internal and external processes. This role is a major contributor to overall MS&T strategy and to the collective success of Commercial Manufacturing & Supply Chain at Vertex.

This role will report to the Executive Director of Finished Drug Products in the MS&T organization. This leadership position will be responsible for identifying future capabilities required and building out a high performing, diverse team focusing on developing and implementing a robust P&L strategy and well-controlled operations. The position is a hybrid position, based at Vertex's corporate headquarters in Boston, MA.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads the P&L organization across modalities, responsible for multiple technical areas and leverages knowledge to build alignment across technical areas or functions
  • Provides leadership to resolve critical issues impacting manufacturing operations in collaboration with relevant stakeholders
  • Responsible for supporting global launches of new products and driving efficiencies throughout the product lifecycle
  • Supports Regulatory on CMC strategy and market applications, and represents Vertex to globalregulatory agencies
  • Represents MS&T on corporate and strategic teams (e.g. supplier partnerships) and long-range planning process
  • Defines strategy and champions effective continuous improvement of manufacturing operations
  • Recruits, directs, motivates and develops teams, maximizing contribution, professional growth and ability to build and sustain a high-performing workforce.
  • Designs and implements functional/department goals; contributes to the development of operational strategy and develops annual business plans to ensure alignment.
  • As a people manager within the organization, may have financial accountabilities and human resource responsibilities for assigned staff.
  • Ability to travel domestic and international (approximately 30%)

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in one or multiple packaging disciplines including materials and closure systems, design of secondary and tertiary components, component compatibility, component qualification,equipment installation and qualification
  • Experience supporting packaging for pharmaceutical products from research through registrationand launch
  • Experience supporting packaging across pharmaceutical dosage forms and across modalities
  • Experience in building and managing a complex global technical/packaging capability
  • The candidate is expected to be a thought leader in selected technical areas and have a proven ability to innovate and implement practical, compliant solutions
  • A proven ability to work seamlessly across teams and develop excellent partnerships with peers.
  • Expert understanding of the principles and regulations associated with GMP products and processes

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Packaging, Chemical, Mechanical, Material Engineering, or a relevant discipline
  • Typically requires 15 years of experience, or the equivalent combination of advanced education and experience, including 7 years of leadership/management experience.

Hybrid-Eligible Or On-Site Eligible

Flex Eligibility Status:

In this Hybrid-Eligible role, you can choose to be designated as:
1. Hybrid: work remotely up to two days per week; or select
2. On-Site: work five days per week on-site with ad hoc flexibility.
