Business Engagement Manager

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Managing Director of the Office of Business Engagement (OBE), you will join a team of collaborative, creative professionals working for the university across schools and colleges to cultivate, develop and manage mutually beneficial partnerships with private-sector companies. These comprehensive relationships will include, but are not limited to, research partnerships, sponsorship opportunities, philanthropy, executive education, talent development/acquisition, and technology transfer. This role will have a specific focus on developing relationships with companies in the biohealth sector, i.e., life sciences and biotechnology companies.

Success in this role will be measured through quantitative outcomes, such as revenue generation, and qualitative outcomes, such as internal and external partner satisfaction, in line with the role's overarching aim to create long-term, sustainable partnerships between industry and the university.


Responsibilities:
Provides input on strategic development of unit, directs donor research activities and events, and/or completes personnel management activities in alignment with business engagement related institutional strategic goals.

  • 10% Evaluates existing strategies and makes recommendations to unit leadership for program enhancement
  • 5% Identifies, proposes, and implements new or revised unit operational policies and procedures
  • 30% Plans and directs staff implementation of new and existing business outreach events, programs, communications, and research activities
  • 30% Monitors portfolio activity and market share and disseminates updates to leadership and appropriate entities
  • 5% Assists with implementing the unit personnel resource allocation plan including hiring, training, supervision, and resolution of personnel issues
  • 20% Identifies and cultivates a robust pipeline of target partners to support college and University goals, and continuously evaluate new potential opportunities for engagement

Qualifications:

- Demonstrated success in a private-sector business development or account management role, or a corporate relations role in higher education, is required. A minimum of 5 years of experience in the corresponding role(s) is preferred. Experience managing multi-stakeholder partnerships or strategic account relationships is a plus.
- Being comfortable and interested in working with professors, researchers, and university administration internally, as well as business executives and private-sector professionals externally, is required.
- An educational or applied background in the biological or life sciences is beneficial.
- Excellent two-way/interpersonal communication skills - strong active listening and problem solving skills as well as strong speaking and writing skills - are essential for success in the role.
- Self-directed project planning and execution skills are essential for success in the role.
- Higher education experience and/or an understanding of differences between higher education and private-sector processes and governance is beneficial. Similarly, an understanding of public-private partnership (P3) models and cross-sector partnerships is beneficial.


Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This is a hybrid position, requiring some work in-person, on-site work and the flexibility for some remote work. In-person vs. remote work expectations will be discussed during the interview process.
