General Summary: The Sheetfed Press Operator, under the direction of the Press Manager, performs daily press procedures; such as keeping a continuous supply of paper prepped in the feeder; keeping the ink fountains full; keeping consistent ink balance while maintaining registration. Must have a working knowledge of offset production environments.
Essential Duties:

  • Have an understanding of job tickets.
  • Keep a continuous supply of paper in the feeder.
  • Use a densitometer to maintain consistent ink coverage over long periods of time.
  • Install and remove plates, blankets, and jackets on the press.
  • Keep ink fountains on the press unit full and stirred.
  • Make-readies and the running and maintenance of the press.
  • Ability to set up a feeder and delivery.
  • Perform basic maintenance to the press.
  • Set the water lines.
  • Wash up ink roller train and set rollers. Ensure wash up trays are placed in the units and the press is restarted.
  • Put the labels back on unfinished skids and wrap the skids with shrink-wrap for identification purposes or re-box unused stock.
  • Maintain proper chemical balance for fountain solution units.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work space at all times.


Marginal Duties:

  • Perform duties of the Jogger when required.


  • Work with maintenance department on major press and auxiliary equipment maintenance.
  • Assist in other departments as needed.
  • Keep press line and pressroom area clean.
  • Retrieves paper skids from inventory when Materials Handler is unavailable.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, job tickets, and procedure manuals.


  • Ability to speak effectively and respond to questions from managers, customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Overall familiarity with Press room procedures and workflow.
  • Requires the ability to operate various tools, devices, and equipment including hand tools, hoist, loupe, RGS, densitometer, scale, splicer, and calculator.
  • Must have an understanding of ink and water balance and average mechanical ability to perform maintenance and troubleshooting skills with regard to press malfunctions.
  • Good leadership skills and ability to be open-minded.
  • Flexibility in doing a variety of jobs.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands and fingers to handle or touch; Talk or hear; frequently required to walk, stoop, kneel or crouch; occasionally required to reach above shoulders; climb or balance; use foot/feet to operate machinery.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to focus.

Work Environment:

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
