Job Summary

The Sterile Processing Department (SPD) SPM information system application administrator is a super-user knowledgeable about sterile processing mission objectives as well as the SPM application. They must also be knowledgeable about computer systems and peripheral hardware, such as barcode scanners, bar code printers, and laser printers. While the application administrator is not a desktop support technician, they are often the first responder to troubleshoot end-user issues and must be capable of clearly articulating the issue encountered and facilitating expedient resolution with the correct IT support group.

The SPM application administrator develops, maintains and assists with the implementation of departmental policies and procedures, as well as competencies and training materials relevant to the SPM application in collaboration with the SPD educators. The incumbent in this position is also responsible to provide regular and ad hoc reports to management as needed and works with Perioperative IT administration to prepare and execute system upgrades.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $101,300 - $151,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

Sterile Processing performs reprocessing, sterilization and distribution of reusable medical devices throughout the UCSF enterprise.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training,
  • A minimum of 2 years of recent clinical inventory management experience in a Sterile Processing environment
  • Recent experience in a perioperative setting including experience in reprocessing, instrument sterilization and the proper handling of surgical instruments
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer systems, software and technology
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team. Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Ability to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational, planning and implementation skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated user acceptance testing and test planning skills.
  • Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.
  • Thorough knowledge of business and process analysis functions. Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
  • Familiarity with data quality and governance issues and requirements.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Current Sterile Processing (HSPA or CBSPD) and/or Surgical Technologist (CST) Certification.
  • If Surgical Technologist Certified (CST) must also obtain SPD certification within 12 months of hire and maintain current SPD certification thereafter

Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area or equivalent experience/training.
  • Demonstrated experience with database administration. Working knowledge of database management systems and standards. Knowledge relating to database system design. Advanced database querying and modeling skills working with moderately complex databases
  • Familiarity with logical data design and data mapping or data conversion.
  • Broad knowledge of various areas of IT
  • Advanced knowledge of computer security tools, best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software. Demonstrated skill at administering moderately complex security controls and configurations to computer hardware,
  • Advanced skills associated with programming design, modification and implementation. Basic knowledge of secure software development. Demonstrated ability to create software specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software. Understanding of and experience troubleshooting client, server and peripherals-related issues and actions
  • Advanced Certification as a surgical instrument specialist (CIS, or CSIS)
  • Advanced Certification as a Flexible Endoscope reprocessing specialist (CER, or CFER)

License/Certification


  • Current Sterile Processing (HSPA or CBSPD) and/or Surgical Technologist (CST) Certification.
  • If Surgical Technologist Certified (CST) must also obtain SPD certification within 12 months of hire and maintain current SPD certification thereafter
