Job Title Department

Histotechnologist II Pathology

Job Summary
The Histotechnologist II functions in a capacity of a Histotechnologist by performing tests and procedures of a predominantly complex or difficult nature. Demonstrates a thorough and comprehensive understanding of the technical methods, concepts and principles necessary to provide the Pathologist with microscopic slides and specimens according to specifications and as may be applicable under a variety of circumstances. May assist in providing technical direction to Histotechnologist I on specific projects and tasks and may otherwise perform any or all of the duties of the Histotechnologist I as required. Exercises professional judgement in locating and selecting from among alternative methods and procedures in specific cases, or in making minor deviations to established guidelines wherein gaps in specificity exist. Provides expertise to Pathologist and other staff in defining the technical limits or applications within which specific requests might be met. Performs a variety of responsible duties in connection with troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, preparing for inspections, providing quality control, and reviewing and authorizing the release or transmittal of select data and test results within prescribed standards. Assists with the microscopic review and analysis of specimens pursuant to the preliminary identification of abnormalities requiring further study.

Typical Duties



  • Performs predominantly complex or difficult tests and procedures requiring knowledge, skills and theoretical judgement consistent with extended training and experience as a certified ASCP Histotechnologist under general or moderate supervision.
  • Applies a high degree of proficiency and skill in executing a variety of advanced tasks, which may include providing technical instruction and training to other staff.
  • Applies complex principles, concepts and practices relevant to area of assignment and tests being performed; exercises professional discretion and judgement by selecting from among variable guidelines and written procedures requiring greater specificity and interpretation. Consults regularly with Pathologist or other staff in a variety of matters requiring a thorough understanding of the principles and concepts involved.
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the safe use, maintenance and proper application of a variety of automatic, semiautomatic and manual analytic instruments and devices, chemicals, reagents and other equipment and appliances and instructs others in their use. Keeps abreast of new methods, developments, tools and equipment, reagents, etc. relative to the field of histology; may recommend their purchase or application and train others in their use.
  • Assumes responsibility for quality assurance and quality control for a prescribed area in compliance with government, hospital safety, and other regulatory requirements, and in ensuring that standards are followed. Assists with inventories and maintains confidentiality with regard to medical records and other data. Operates a PC or other workstation and performs responsible administrative tasks in support of the unit.
  • Performs technical tasks associated with the Histotechnologist I position with regard to preparation of microscopic slides and specimens for examination and the use of techniques, materials and equipment related thereto. Performs such tasks with expertise and a high degree of proficiency.
  • Operates laboratory information systems or other PC to maintain records and data.
  • Reports to the Laboratory Services Manager.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Graduate of an accredited Histotechnology program (Must provide Official Transcripts at time of Interview)
  • One (1) year of work experience in a hospital, clinical laboratory or healthcare setting as a Histotechnologist


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) as either a Histotechnologist (ASCP-HTL) or as a Histology Technician (ASCP-HT)


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics



  • Knowledge of inventory control and record keeping; ability to assume primary responsibility for the maintenance, transmittal and release of essential data and records as assigned.
  • Skill in the safe and effective use, maintenance and calibration of a variety of automatic, semiautomatic and manual analytic instruments and devices. Knowledge of the safe and effective use of chemicals, reagents and other equipment, and the ability to demonstrate and explain their use to others. Ability to provide general oversight, guidance and direction to other staff or act as team leader a particular shift, project or activity, and ensure that protocols are followed in connection with all procedures.
  • Skill and knowledge necessary to assume responsibility for maintaining quality assurance and quality control for a prescribed area in compliance with government, safety and other regulatory requirements. Ability to explain and interpret such requirements to others.
  • Skill in the use of laboratory information systems for purposes of maintaining and recording data and records in an accurate manner.
  • Skill and proficiency in the performance of any and all tasks associated with the Histotechnologist I and II positions with regard to preparation of microscopic slides and specimens for examination and the use of techniques, materials and equipment related thereto. Ability to perform assigned tasks according to acceptable standards of performance in connection with periodic employee evaluations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others both verbally and through written reports, using a high degree of technical language. Ability to read and interpret communications from others.
  • Ability to assist Pathologist, Histotechnologist or other staff in highly special tasks and
    procedures.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of patient related materials in compliance with HIPP A requirements.
  • This position occasionally requires various types of physical exertion including, but not limited to climbing, lifting, pulling, pushing, prolonged standing, operating laboratory equipment and other devices, or moving moderate to heavy weight.


Physical and Environmental Demands

This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
