Description

Columbia Engineering invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Earth and Environmental Engineering at Columbia University in the City of New York, starting July 1, 2025. Applications at all ranks, including Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Full Professor, will be considered.

Candidates are sought broadly from areas with Mining / Environmental Interactions across extraction, processing, and environmental and climate remediation and enhancement. Candidates with experimental and/or computational approaches to measure, characterize, and improve industrial environmental, and climate impacts are especially encouraged to apply.

Areas of interest include (but are not limited to): critical materials; circular economy ties to carbon management and renewable energy; extraterrestrial resource exploration; water lean and low residence time extraction efforts; sustainable separation, extraction, and recovery of energy-relevant critical materials and rare earth elements from primary mineral resources and waste streams (urban mining); novel and transformative extraction and separation technologies; green chemistry and decarbonization approaches in mining and mining-related technologies, and incisive approaches to industrial ecology.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the advancement of their field and the department by developing an original and leading externally funded research program and contributing to the department's undergraduate and graduate educational mission. Columbia fosters multidisciplinary research and encourages collaborations with academic departments and units across Columbia University, including the newly established climate school. The Department actively participates in the school-wide Engineering for Humanity initiatives that relate to climate change mitigation, sustainable energy and water, and systems engineering and integration.


Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. or its professional equivalent by the start date of the appointment. The Department is especially interested in qualified candidates who will contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. Applicants for this position at the Assistant Professor and Associate Professor without tenure levels must have the potential to do pioneering research and to teach effectively. Applicants for this position at the tenured level (Associate or Full Professor) must have a demonstrated record of outstanding research accomplishments, excellent teaching credentials, and established leadership in the field. Exceptionally well-qualified applicants at all ranks may be considered for a Named Chair.
