APM TerminalsThe APM Terminals Investment team is responsible for
- growing APM Terminals through investment
- driving large and complex concession extension efforts
- setting the portfolio strategy for the U.S. portfolio

These three responsibilities include i) terminal expansion projects, ii) public and private tenders for port and container terminal concessions and leases, iii) greenfield and brownfield container terminal development, iv) mergers & acquisitions and v) divestments.

This role is part of the APM Terminals Investment Team for USA and Canada and therefore based in our U.S. headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. The role reports into the Head of Investments, USA and Canada.

APM Terminals Investment is responsible for both growth and other corporate development activities globally. The APM Terminals port infrastructure investments vary from public-private partnerships to private M&A transactions through public tenders or direct negotiations with governments, port authorities and/or private parties.

The Investment Manager is expected to contribute to executing the growth strategy and pipeline based on pre-aligned criteria. In addition to the port infrastructure investments, other logistics and services opportunities that create value through the global integrator of container logistics vision of our parent company A.P. Moller-Maersk will also need to be considered.

The Investment Manager will also help develop and execute the strategy for existing business entities and portfolio projects.

Key activities

  • Project management
    • Identify, screen and develop investment opportunities and projects.
    • Assess the commercial attractiveness and feasibility of investments, make recommendations to Senior Management on divestment/investment decisions and prepare proposals for and conduct negotiation processes.
    • Coordinate project development in cooperation with relevant functions, including Commercial, Engineering, Operations and Legal, and review of the respective functional input with a critical eye and challenge as relevant.
    • Lead smaller projects and support/co-leads larger ones from concept to conclusion. Establish positions on all key aspects (eg., scope, valuation, shareholding, governance).
    • Provide communication planning and relevant presentation material on the investment value proposition for external and internal stakeholders.
  • Business development (Growth)
    • Identify leads via networking, events and/or other sources and establish and develop relationships with executives within targeted markets and sectors as well as public authorities and entities.
    • Comfortable and confident in meeting and negotiating with high level Government and State officials and other external stakeholders.
    • Drive growth projects forward with diligence and dexterity.
    • Develop and manage the project and opportunity Pipeline.
    • Maintain market awareness regarding market developments, supply/demand, pricing, competition etc., through internal and external sources and networking.
    • Provide industry, competitor and other analyses to management.

Key professional skills/requirements

  • Analytical and creative problem-solving mind.
  • Relevant experience with Public Private Partnership (PPP) practices and understanding of key risks and opportunities in concession agreements in port or similar infrastructure business.
  • Hands-on experience with overall opportunity/investment case development and/or M&A process, including deal structuring and preparing and conducting due diligence.
  • Negotiation skilled and able to conduct negotiations in an international environment.
  • Finance acumen, potentially including some experience with eg. valuation, financial modelling, synergy quantification, risk and upside evaluation.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills.
  • Existing network within ports, container terminals and/or shipping industry is an advantage.
  • Willingness and ability to travel and meet government officials, potential partners, customers, terminal and corporate teams, and other stakeholders.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) possessing empathy, personal tact, and multi-cultural understanding.

Background / Education

  • Minimum 7 years of working experience with/responsibility for strategy, M&A and/or Business/Corporate Development
  • Fluent in English
