Position Highlights

The University of Arizona's College of Fine Arts (CFA) seeks an organized and motivated individual for the position of Academic Advising Professional I (Academic Advisor I). The Academic Advisor serves as the front-line contact for undergraduate students for developmental academic advising to empower students to achieve their academic and career goals. The Academic Advisor builds formative relationships with students by providing clarification on procedures and academic requirements of specific programs or majors.

Majors likely to be assigned to this advisor may include (but are not limited to) students in the School of Music (in person and Online). This may include populations in any programs within the college and as assigned by the Associate Director of Advising for the College of Fine Arts. The position will report to the College of Fine Arts Associate Director - Academic Advising. This position is physically based on the University of Arizona Main Campus.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Prepare advising materials; review and complete degree audits.
  • Assess individual students' stage of development and advise them to establish realistic and attainable educational and career goals.
  • Advise students on education plans, selecting courses, and career options.
  • Evaluate use of transfer credit for possible equivalencies for degree programs.
  • Assist with New Student and Transfer Orientations.
  • Refer students to appropriate departmental offices, faculty and support services to help with academic, personal and career counseling, and academic skills development.
  • Update and maintain database of student majors including student files, records, and advisor notes on Trellis.
  • Monitor students' academic progress toward degree and assists students in completion.
  • Assist the Associate Director - Academic Advising, and Music Advisor in identifying retention and completion obstacles within the school and college.
  • Participate in college-wide milestone events such as CFA Awards Convocation, Commencement, and other student events.
  • Participate in the Coordinating Advisors College and Music School meetings and activities to ensure the best possible experience for CFA students while attending the University of Arizona.
  • Work with Schools Curriculum Committee to identify curriculum issues.
  • Attend meetings to stay abreast on policy and procedures in the College and across campus.
  • Consult with Associate Director-Academic Advising on more difficult or unusual cases.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

  • Excellent interpersonal communication, relationship building, and student service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Knowledge of cultural competence and awareness concerning diverse student populations.
  • Ability to handle a variety of tasks, prioritize projects, and solve problems.
  • Knowledge of outreach practices, and student success services.
  • Knowledge of FERPA and ethical principles in working with student data.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 1 year of relevant work experience required.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with undergraduates in higher education.
  • Experience using U of A software applications, including UAccess.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Experience in student services beyond advising, such as mentoring, admissions, orientations, etc.
  • Proficiency in University Systems and Information Technology tools.
