Position Summary
The Urban Health Program (UHP) seeks a Director to provide leadership for the organization and operation of the UHP Early Outreach and Pre-College Programs. These pre-college academic pipeline programs support students in the 4th through 12th grades from populations that are under-represented in the medical and health sciences professions. The Director will be responsible for setting the programs' long and short-term goals; designing, implementing, developing, monitoring, and evaluating academic enrichment and career awareness programs for pre-college students; developing/implementing support services for program students; proposal/report writing, staff supervision and developing, establishing liaisons with public and parochial school personnel and corporate and community agencies, and serving on University and external committees and councils to enhance the work of the programs.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Administer the operation of the UHP Early Outreach and Pre-College Programs, including recruiting students, designing curriculum, implementing services and educational activities, and related business and staffing matter.
  • Devise and implement operational policies, monitor, and review the financial and administrative practices of UHP and UI Health to ensure effective management according to city, state, and financial regulations, and UIC policies and practices.
  • Monitor and manage Early Outreach and Pre-College Program budgets and ensure that timely and required reporting is generated.
  • Devise marketing campaigns and other avenues for early exposure to the health sciences for students from traditionally underrepresented groups.
  • Design and create curriculum and programs for academic enrichment opportunities for 4th through 12th grade students interested in health sciences and health professions.
  • Develop long and short-range goals and encourage staff support, commitment, and recommendations relative to their respective program components.
  • Partner with the Chicago Public Schools, including Charter Schools, and other educational institutions and organizations to establish and maintain pipelines for underrepresented student groups into Early Outreach and Pre-College programs.
  • Ensure that grants and contracts are implemented as specified.
  • Contribute to the development of the UHP Annual Report.
  • Oversee test taking strategies and test prep curriculum.
  • Utilize multimedia approaches and online activities to improve student skills.
  • Create programs specific to UHP needs to engage schools, city agencies, community, parents, students, and alumni with the programs' goals. Coordinate pre-event marketing, and activities, onsite staffing, and post-event follow up with the goal of maximizing participation.
  • Plan, assign and review the work of staff to ensure that group objectives are met. Hire, train, develop and manage staff to ensure that a qualified staff exists to meet group objectives.
  • Provide professional development for K-12 instructional staff participating in UHP programming.
  • Serve on unit, college, and campus committees as necessary.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Master's degree in Education, Public Administration, Health Policy, Social Sciences, Health Sciences, or a related field required.
    • A minimum of three years' experience designing and managing academic programs or curriculum for a diverse student population.
    • Knowledge of current high school advising best practices and federal regulations governing high school and college preparatory academics.
    • Knowledge of budget management, and federal and state fiscal regulations.
    • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Public speaking experience required.


    Preferred Qualifications
    Travel Requirements:
    Local travel to schools and partner organizations is required, along with regional and national travel to attend meetings, conferences, and other professional events.

    Other:
    Flexibility to work evenings and weekends is required.
