Senior Nuclear Engineering Technologist - Welder Test Examiner & Welding Services

Duke Energy is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented weld testing examiner to join our team. The candidate will be responsible for evaluating and certifying welders to ensure compliance with the AWS (American Welding Society) and the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) codes and standards. This role involves administering testing, inspecting weld quality and maintaining documentation processes.

Responsibilities

  • Weld Test Examiner responsibilities.
    • Conducts welder qualification testing per AD-EG-ALL-1621, ASME Section IX Welding, Brazing and Fusing Qualifications
    • Maintains and ensures accuracy of Welding Performance Qualifications (WPQ) and welder qualification records within the Nuclear Welding Program CodeMan software database.
    • Maintains welding records associated with ASME Section IX (Welder Performance Qualifications).
    • Qualifies welding procedures (Procedure Qualification Records) and develops Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)
    • Purchase and maintain stock. Test coupons, filler material, and necessary tools, consumables, and supplies to efficiently operate weld test shop.
  • Programmatic and administrative controls applicable to:
    • Verifies welder identification prior to beginning testing.
    • Qualification tests include. GTAW / SMAW / FCAW / GMAW / Brazing (as required)
    • Inspection Hold points.
    • Welder responsibilities & acceptance criteria
  • Weld Test Examiner shall be familiar with Code qualification requirements per ASME Section IX
  • Understand and apply knowledge of weld process essential variables.
  • Control, Issuance, and identification of test coupons and filler metal.
  • Testing and examination of test coupons
  • Retests, renewal, initial test of qualifications
  • Entry and maintenance of Welder qualification records within the CodeMan program.

Basic/Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology and minimum of six years related experience.
  • In lieu of Bachelor's degree, Associates Degree in Engineering Technology or equivalent and minimum of eight years related experience OR High School Diploma/GED and minimum of twelve years related experience.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated basic computer skills (ability to work with WORD, EXCEL, NAS and other computer programs)
  • Experience working independently and/or with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communications, both written and oral
  • Demonstrated Problem Solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely.
  • Experience adjusting to rapidly changing conditions and assignments (e.g., locations, work schedules, physical environments, etc.)
  • Must currently be a CWI (Certified Welding Inspector)
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Experience with Nuclear Power Plant standards
  • Ability to independently and confidently administer necessary welding/brazing testing and competently judge the acceptability of the test coupons.
  • Experience reading and interpreting procedures, drawings and ASME codes.

Specific Requirements

  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
  • Ability to work safely in a fabrication/shop environment.
  • Ability to safely operate necessary shop equipment and tools (i.e. coupon cutter, bender, band saw, and misc. grinding equipment).
  • Carry up to 25 pounds of equipment.
  • Ability to use and wear personal safety equipment.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Codes including, but not limited to ASME Section IX, Section III, Section XI, Section II, D1.1, B31.1 etc.
