Job Purpose

To support the corporate ISO 14001 Certification, the role holder will be responsible for managing National Grid's Environmental Compliance program on a regional basis, to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental requirements and National Grid procedures.

Key Accountabilities
  • Develop and maintain company environmental procedures, through tracking emerging laws and regulations
  • Act as regulatory liaison during environmental inspections and internal audits
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with operations, engineering, construction, and other personnel to share best practices, train employees, and communicate business decisions
  • Manage environmental incidents including oil and chemical releases or other incidents, direct response activities and coordinate with operation departments and regulatory authorities
  • Lead or participate in root-cause analysis related to environmental incidents and implement corrective actions
  • Participate in periodic emergency response training and drills
  • Perform environmental assessments of waste storage areas, bulk storage tanks, emergency generators, oil/water separators, and other operational equipment at operating yards, electric substations, fleet garages, gas regulator stations, rights of way, and other company properties to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Ensure proper documentation including waste contingency plans, SPCC plans, manifests, bulk storage registrations are accurate and complete
  • Prepare annual regulatory reports (RCRA, TSCA, PSC, SARA, Predetermined Beneficial Use)
  • Determine classification of wastes (i.e., hazardous, universal, non-hazardous, etc.) and track facility RCRA waste generator status
  • Arrange for waste characterization sampling and laboratory analysis of various media to assess recycling/disposal options, and arrange for transportation and disposal
  • Facilitate and champion recycling and reuse of electric and gas assets through company Investment Recovery department
  • Review and manage environmental aspects of projects during design and construction
  • Perform environmental due diligence in support of property transactions and third-party access requests
  • Provide technical support for managing data and documents pertinent to stakeholder communications, project schedules, environmental issues, studies, and expenditures. Identify and mitigate environmental risk and coordinate key initiatives with safety/health departments
Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in Environmental/Civil Engineering or a relevant environmental scientific discipline and 5 - 10 years of related or equivalent work experience. (RCRA, DOT and 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER training a plus)
  • Ability to effectively communicate with peers and regulators, including technical and non-technical audiences
  • Effective problem-solving skills with ability to obtain, research and analyze data; draw inferences; and make recommendations to provide guidance to operations, construction, and project teams
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently, establish daily work priorities, effectively manage multiple projects, plan assignments, and organize work with moderate guidance
  • Understanding of project management techniques and methods
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications, GIS and information management systems
  • Familiarity with contractor management requirements (proposal review, obtainment of purchase orders, invoice review) for environmental consultants, waste services, emergency response vendors, and laboratories

Salary: $75,000 - 88,000

This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills.
