Overview:

We are seeking a Pollution Prevention Technical Specialist who will focus on to support the Oak Ridge National Laboatory (ORNL) Pollution Prevention Program with its mission to reduce the volume and/or toxicity of all ORNL waste streams, implement sustainable acquisition, and meet pollution prevention-related regulatory requirements. Major job responsibilities include: manage the ORNL office material recycling program, implement material stream-specific recycling programs, provide technical and reporting support to the Sustainable Acquisition program and pollution prevention-related regulatory requirements, and complete special projects as directed. This position resides in the Pollution Prevention (PP) organization in the Transportation and Waste Management Division (TWMD) in the Environmental, Safety, Health and Quality (ESH&Q) Directorate at ORNL. This position resides in the Pollution Prevention Program in the Transporation and Waste Management Division, Environmental, Safely, Health and Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Manage the cost-effective ORNL office materials recycling program, including planning, cost tracking, preparing annual reports, program evaluation, and responding to requests for information; identifying and evaluating new waste streams for the recycling program; identifying recycling options for ORNL projects; tracking waste generation data, analyzing waste reduction trends, and reporting on the progress of the recycling project implementation.

  • Support implementation of recycling programs for specific materials/equipment as needed.

  • Provide technical support to the Sustainable Acquisition Program working closely with Procurement to advocate the purchase of cost-effective sustainable products including less toxic/hazardous, biobased, and/or recycled-content products instead of virgin products; to track the biobased, EPEAT, and other specific environmentally-preferable products required for the ORNL Sustainable Acquisition to determine progress toward goals and report on progress.

  • Support other special project activities as directed such as providing technical support to organizational and material-specific Pollution Prevention Opportunity Assessments (PPOA) including evaluating technically feasible and economically practicable source reduction and recycling options including reducing hazardous and nonhazardous wastes; coordinating with the ORNL Environmental Management System (EMS) personnel to continue to integrate pollution prevention/sustainability into the applicable environmental objectives; presenting pollution prevention-related information, such as on ORNL recycling, at training workshops and conferences; working on other specific activities with the ORNL Pollution Prevention Coordinator as needed such as resource and project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and other managerial assignments.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in engineering, science or related field

  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant sustainability and pollution prevention or other relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with implementing cost-effective sustainable acquisition such as identifying and implementing the procurement and use of environmentally preferable products, tracking purchased materials and goals, and compiling and reporting sustainable acquisition data.

  • Experience with identifying and implementing materials for cost-effective recycle.

  • Experience completing PPOAs, coordinating/integrating pollution prevention/sustainability into site EMSs, and compiling and presenting materials for training workshops and conferences.

  • ORNL experience, including with sustainability/pollution prevention, is strongly desired.

  • Familiar with the pollution prevention regulatory and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) requirements, data and document compilation, and reporting.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
