Research Technologist I

Medical College of Wisconsin
United States, Wisconsin, Milwaukee
Jan 30, 2025

Position Description:

Purpose

Research technician position is available in the Department of Cell Biology focused on biochemistry and drug discovery for G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), which are major drug targets for medicine. Our lab is a highly-creative and and dynamic Cell Biology lab involved in cutting-edge technologies collaborating internationally on projects with other labs. We specialize in pharmacology and using protein structure to design and screen compounds as potential drugs at various GPCR signaling pathways aimed at treating depression, pain, cancer, and various other diseases.

Technicians work in a team environment and collaborate on several projects and develop techniques/skill sets including but not limited to: molecular biology/DNA construct design, tissue culture and protein expression, high-throughput screening and drug discovery, quantitative pharmacology and structure-activity relationships, mutagenesis and chemical biology, and protein purification and structural/biophysical methods of measurement. Technicians also co-publish on high-impact discoveries from the lab and have opportunity to develop their own projects.

We welcome highly-motivated and well-organzied candidates capable of independent work in a laboratory setting. Candidates should have strong interests in medicine and/or pharmacology with strong backgrounds in biochemistry or biology related fields of study. Candidates with some experience with tissue culture/aseptic techniques (e.g. HEK, CHO cells), protein expression and/or purification (e.g. SDS-PAGE, Western blot), or molecular biology (e.g. PCR, primer design) are desired.

Primary Functions

  • Demonstrate attention to detail, good organizational and time management skills
  • Perform daily tissue culture and maintenace of cell lines
  • Perform weekly protein expression and/or purification procedures
  • Prepare weekly buffers, dilutions, or stock solutions for routine procedures and cell culture treatments
  • Perform weekly experiments, data analysis, and data archiving according to supervisors' specifications
  • Attend weekly individual meetings with supervisors and lab meetings/journal clubs with the group
  • Operate and help maintain analytical and high-throughput equipment for protein quality control analysis (e.g. HPLC, SDS-PAGE) and cell signaling (e.g. fluorescence and luminescence assays)
  • Monthly inventory of supplies and routine monitoring of lab reagents/supplies
  • Daily to weekly ordering of reagents and supplies
  • Maintain detailed and accurate data records in notebooks for all performed assays
  • Work in a team environment to help others and train other lab members
