JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Veterinary Extension and Field Investigation Team in the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences is looking for an Extension Veterinarian to be part of the team at the Assistant Clinical Professor/Associate Clinical Professor level. The Extension Team consists of veterinarians with practical field experience, who provide significant contributions to the extension, teaching, research and service missions of the Department, College and Penn State University. The requested position is an integral and necessary part of the Team in order to sustain a continued high level of capacity, productivity, and impact.

This position will be a clinical (non-tenure) track, 48-week position on the faculty of the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences. Responsibilities will consist of 55% Extension, 25% Teaching, and 20% Research.

A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, or DVM-equivalent degree, obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education is required. Graduates of schools that are not accredited by the AVMA Council on Education must meet one of the following requirements: a) Proof of certification of their final transcript by the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG); b) Possession of a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice veterinary medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States that includes successful completion of the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) or its predecessors, the National Board Examination (NBE) and the Clinical Competency Test (CCT); OR c) Proof that the education obtained is equivalent to that gained in a veterinary medical program that is accredited by the AVMA Council on Education. An AVMA-accredited veterinary medical school or college must have accepted the final transcript from the foreign veterinary medical school at full value for placement into an advanced degree, postgraduate educational program, or training program (e.g., residency or graduate program).

Graduate training (MSc, PhD) and/or board-certification in a relevant field is preferred. Familiarity with common agricultural livestock and/or poultry production systems and veterinary practices in Pennsylvania is expected.

In its extension and field investigation roles, the Team helps to increase Penn State's land-grant impact, one of the goals of the University Strategic Plan (https://strategicplan.psu.edu/). The Team serves Pennsylvania's dairy and livestock producers, veterinarians and allied industries, regulatory partners, and private industry by providing proactive and reactive solutions to animal health, animal well-being, food safety, food quality, public health, and farm personnel issues. This replacement position will work seamlessly and in complement with the Team in conducting these activities, increasing the Team's reach and impact. The Extension Veterinarian will work with various teams (eg. Dairy, Livestock, etc.) in the Penn State Extension Animal Systems Unit. An individual with complementary expertise to the existing Team members will be sought so as to intentionally broaden the Team's scope, and effectively address issues such as antimicrobial stewardship, public health and zoonotic disease, one-health, and animal well-being.

The Veterinary Extension and Field Investigation Team contributes substantially to the College's teaching mission, especially in the VBSC major, but also in ANSC and other programs/courses. The Team brings a valuable perspective to the undergraduate experience because of the members' veterinary training and experience.

The successful candidate will bring a unique animal health and one-health perspective to the classroom, carrying the equivalent of a 6-credit teaching load per year. In the first year, this will consist of co-teaching at least VBSC 423W in the Fall, and VBSC 407 and/or VBSC 403 in the Spring. In the second year and beyond they will assume full responsibility for VBSC 423W (3 Cr) and VBSC 403 (3 Cr). In addition, the incumbent will participate in guest lectures for other courses as required. The candidate will also advise about 20-25 undergraduate students in the VBSC major.

The research expectations for this position will consist of leading and collaborating on applied, practical research and knowledge discovery efforts, as part of the Team. These efforts will focus on areas such as antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship, infectious animal and zoonotic diseases, food safety and quality, or other relevant areas related to her/his expertise and interests. As a veterinary field investigator, the individual will also conduct on-farm research to investigate and solve herd health, food safety/quality and public health issues, in conjunction with the Animal Diagnostic Laboratory.
