Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).


General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Budget & Planning Analyst provides financial support to the business by overseeing spending to ensure that funds are allocated appropriately and used according to plan. Their support includes but is not limited to cost accounting activities (including journal entries and managing loadings and allocations), regulatory filings support, risk and opportunity coordination, forecast and budget development, variance analysis, work order creation/reconciliation/closeout, preparation of financial reports/statements, financial master data management, invoice review, and cash flow management (to include timely analysis/reconciliations). Provide analysis and modeling support for project/program managers, business development, and business area directors. This role will be supporting our Customer Operations portfolio.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver reliable and precise execution of day-to-day Business Operations responsibilities including cost accounting activities; including journal entries and managing overheads and allocations, forecast development, variance analysis, risk and opportunity coordination and cash flow management to include timely analysis/reconciliations
  • Review/audit general ledger (G/L) and work order activity to ensure all activity is properly recorded in accordance with financial policies and procedures including O&M vs. capital
  • Assist in the development of the budget/long term financial plan by providing data and evidence-based analysis and incorporate the workplan into the financial models. Consolidate organizational budgets for review as well as prepare reports and presentations
  • Provide data and financial analysis in support of external/internal customer requirements and audit requests. Review for completeness, accuracy and compliance with company standards
  • Review and understand the cost structure including contract terms, cost workflow, etc. and contributes effectively to the job setup and closeout processes
  • Work with Project Managers and Department Leads to optimize spend and operational efficacies on all projects/work and ensure adherence to work order workflow/management process.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial and compliance reports such as financial statements and budget performance, including monthly budget/forecast to actual variance reports, Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) and Regulatory compliance reports
  • Build, maintain, and troubleshoot moderate to complex Excel financial models; document processes and procedures; recommend process improvements; manage/maintain financial master data
  • Assist in data analysis for regulatory filings by gathering and organizing government, regulatory, and compliance data; prepare for leader review for rate filings, create/support exhibits, conduct reporting for documents used in rate responses
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Strong analytical ability, including the ability to quickly and effectively analyze, compare, and interpret data as well as strong problem solving skills
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office programs with an emphasis on Excel
  • Knowledge of economic and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and procedures, the financial markets, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the analysis and reporting of financial data
  • Proficient with financial management and analysis software (e.g. SAP, Business Intelligence, Power BI)
  • Skill in collecting and analyzing complex data
  • Ability to present data clearly and concisely

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, or related discipline with two (2) or more years of experience in financial planning, budgeting, and spend analysis

    • (OR) Associate's DegreeFinance, Economics, Accounting, or related discipline with four (4) or more years of experience in financial planning, budgeting, and spend analysis
    • (OR) High School Diploma/GED with six (6) or more years of experience in financial planning, budgeting, and spend analysis
