Automation Engineer II

The Automation Engineer II will work in the Automation Engineering group maintaining and supporting liquid handling robotics and real-time PCR instruments for our commercial and research laboratories. This person will need to perform, write and update maintenance SOPs and Automation practices and procedures. He/she will utilize established mathematical/statistical techniques to do basic analysis independently and complex analysis with appropriate guidance.

Highly proficient in basic laboratory skills (accurate/precise manual pipetting, understanding and usage of basic equipment like centrifuges/vortexers/spectrophotometers/thermocyclers, knowledge of proper reagent handling, ability to follow manual laboratory SOPs with successful results)

Responsibilities:

  • Provide service support for Agilent, Hamilton, Beckman Coulter, and Tecan liquid handling instruments, including troubleshooting, routine maintenance, and calibration.
  • Provide service support for LC480 instruments, including troubleshooting, routine maintenance, and calibration.
  • Write, review, update, and provide documentation for well-defined liquid handling methods of moderate to complex scope.
  • Thorough understanding and ability to execute manual laboratory assays/processes; ability to identify important/difficult aspects of manually processes that need to be carefully translated to new automated process
  • Identify areas for improvement in existing automation workflows and how to implement.
  • Work with automation engineering team to design, develop and build integrated automation platforms for improved usability and serviceability.
  • Assist in planning and executing complex laboratory experiments into an automated system.
  • Contribute insight toward experimental design and interpretation as well as troubleshoot laboratory processes and protocols in an automated system.
  • Works some Saturdays (if applicable)
  • Provide afterhours and holiday support as needed for laboratory equipment and environmental monitoring equipment.

Qualifications:

  • BS in Engineering, Chemistry, or Life Science with a minimum 2-5 years experience maintaining and supporting automated instrumentation.
  • Ability and desire to work in a team environment supporting regulated and research laboratories
  • Should have excellent organizational and communication skills, be hardworking, proficient with Microsoft Excel, and comfortable with various computer applications
  • Experience working with nucleic acids, PCR, and/or microarrays is preferred
  • Familiar with numerous instrument platforms (Beckman, Tecan, Agilent, Roche, Hamilton) to provide technical and service support
  • Experience working in a regulated environment and/or developing projects under design control is valuable but not required
