Job Summary

Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals. Provides direction to staff according to established policies and management guidance. Administers policies that directly affect subordinate staff. Recommends changes to department policies and practices. Identifies risks and responds accordingly. Provide priority setting and work flow analysis.

Works extensively with researchers and administrators building and maintaining research capture systems on the UCSF Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) system. In this customer-facing role, the position oversees (and implements) the support and operations model for REDCap to ensure the success of a world-class implementation of the platform. Uses domain expertise to develop team and customer clarity around system usage, user access, routine and extended support, and secure and stable operations. Generates and maintains logical models, documentation, metadata, and data structures for complex data platforms. Employs business process analysis and stakeholder engagement to support the initiation, long-term support, and reformation of research projects at scale and across domains.

As an agent for practice transformation, acts as both a repository and disseminator of best practices for REDCap support, training, documentation, and operations. Responsible for ensuring the secure and stable operations of the UCSF REDCap instances through well-documented processes and a healthy operational culture. Champions reproducible approaches and acts as a thought leader for future research data capture systems operations and development strategies. Evaluates and recommends new technologies to extend existing secure data capture systems.

Supervises and mentors team members and contractors to ensure accurate and timely completion of work. Leads team towards a philosophy of research reproducibility through course-setting, best practices, and dissemination of documentation for internal protocols and customer engagement/training.

May indirectly matrix manage support staff within the ARS Service Desk, and/or provide guidance and leadership to support staff within the IT Service Desk or other UCSFIT teams, in the course of operationalizing a complete support experience.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $225,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

Academic Research Systems (ARS) serves the needs of the UCSF research community by providing an integrated repository of HIPAA-compliant clinical and life sciences data and a centralized, secure, professionally managed infrastructure for the storage and management of research data. ARS empowers medical, scientific investigations by offering secure computing environments, data capture, management and analysis tools, and support services that meet researchers' needs.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • CITI Human Subjects Protection
  • 5 or more years of experience performing application support in accordance with ITIL incident problem and change management guidelines
  • 5 or more years of experience in database design and support
  • 5 or more years experience supporting and managing REDCap as an application administrator
  • 3 or more years of experience managing a team of technical support personnel, either directly or through matrix reporting
  • Experience creating and updating SOPs for routine support or operational duties for a large-scale, web-facing multi-tenant platform.
  • Proven track record of evaluating REDCap external modules and new REDCap core features, determining risk versus reward, making go/no-go decisions about implementation, and completing risk assessments for these modules and features.
  • Knowledge of data management systems, practices, and standards.
  • Knowledge of relevant rules and regulations.
  • Requires knowledge of database management systems.
  • Must have knowledge of location and system protocols and procedures for budget and account management.
  • Requires critical thinking, persuasion/negotiation, mentoring, leadership/management, problem-solving, human resources policies and procedures relating to management responsibilities, verbal and written communication, quantitative abilities, analytical, and strong technical database systems skills.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in platform integration and the specification of platform services and pipeline engineering.
  • Proven track record of creating user-facing trainings for REDCap in the service of improving researcher experience
  • Experience effecting action from application administrators, system administrators, and engineers in support of maintaining operations for a large-scale, web-facing multi-tenant platform.
